Award-winning short documentary The Vasectomy Doctor to screen across Ireland
26 Feb 2020 : Nathan Griffin
The Vasectomy Doctor
In association with access > CINEMA, Paul Webster’s award-winning Short Documentary The Vasectomy Doctor is to be distributed to 80 cinema clubs throughout Ireland.

The film tells the story of Dr. Andrew Rynne, the first doctor to perform a vasectomy in Ireland. He has since performed 35,000. This did not come without controversy in the extremely Catholic Ireland of the seventies and eighties, but Dr. Rynne persevered in the face of opposition from the church. In the eighties, he challenged the restrictive laws on contraceptives by selling condoms without a prescription. He got his day in court and forced the government to change policy. In 1990, Dr. Rynne was about to perform a vasectomy on a patient, when a gunman came in and shot him. After surviving this attempt on his life, Dr. Rynne would later meet with his assailant and forgive him.

Dr. Rynne, now in his seventies and retired, tells his story with his trademark wit and charm, while some scarcely credible Archive footage, courtesy of RTÉ, is also interwoven. Dramatic reconstructions flesh out the story with a cast including Ciaran McMahon, Zeb Moore, Steve Gunn, and Norma Sheahan.

The Vasectomy Doctor is a directed by Paul Webster and produced by Ronan Cassidy for Carbonated Comet Productions Ltd and was funded by Screen Ireland.

The film has won awards at festivals including Offline, Clones, Dingle, Fastnet, The South Texas Underground Film Festival, The Richard Harris Film Festival, Waterford Film Festival, and the IFI Stranger than Fiction Festival’s coveted Audience Award.
