'The Man Who Wanted to Fly' to Have TV Premiere on RTÉ

Bobby Coote, star of 'The Man Who Wanted to Fly'
The most successful Irish documentary of the year set for broadcast on RTÉ One, Monday July 22nd at 9.35pm.

The Man Who Wanted to Fly tells the irresistible story of 80-something-year-old bachelor farmer Bobby Coote from Cavan, who has had a lifelong dream to fly a plane. Enlisting the help of his neighbour Sean, the two set out to build their own field of dreams, cutting out a runway in Sean’s farm and even build a hangar in this small rural community.

The Man Who Wanted to Fly has become the best performing Irish documentary of the year, eclipsing international big hitters at the Irish box office. The documentary is the best performing Irish theatrical documentary of the last two years and the third best performing documentary of 2019 overall - trailing only the Oscar Winning Free Soloand Asif Kapadia’s Diego Maradona

‘The Man Who Wanted To Fly’ is directed by Frank Shouldice and produced by Trisha Canning and Cormac Hargaden from Loosehorse with funding from Screen Ireland, RTE and Dublin Aerospace. The film was distributed by Nell Roddy and Robert McCann Finn of Breakout Pictures.

The Man Who Wanted To Fly landed in to over 40 theatrical venues on the island of Ireland after opening up in just six cinemas on March 29th 2019, playing in cinemas for three months from its release date. It had multiple sold out screenings including at the IFI, Odeon Cavan, Light House Dublin and others across Ireland. The box office was over two and half times its distribution budget and The Man Who Wanted To Fly is the independent film hit of 2019.

Speaking of the film’s success, director Frank Shouldice said: 

“I’m delighted that audiences are so enthusiastic about finding the ordinary quite extraordinary. Such a heartfelt reaction to our film all around Ireland makes it five years well spent."
