IFB Announce Q1 2017 Funding Decisions

The Irish Film Board has announced the successful applicants for development, production and distribution funding for the first quarter of this year, with a total of just over €4.2M allocated.

The most significant sum of this round goes to writer/director Carmel Winters under the production loan category in the form of €600,000 for ‘Float Like A Butterfly’, with Samson Films producing.

This exceeds last quarter’s largest funding amount by €200,000, when writer/director Trish McAdam of ‘End of Romance’ received €400,000 for her project, which is produced by Fleming Creative.

Production Loans
Fiction Feature Films
A further three projects have also exceeded this amount, with €500,000 apiece going to the following:

  • ‘Trade’, Hong Khaou (Director), Mark O'Halloran (Writer), Marcie Films
  • ‘Damo & Ivor: The Movie’, Rob Burke & Ronan Burke (Directors), Jules Coll & Andy Quirke (Writers), Blue Ink Films
  • ‘A Girl From Moghadishu’, Mary McGuckian (Writer/Director), EGFilm Productions

Three additional projects under this subcategory received provisional offers of commitment:

  • ‘Dark Lies The Island’, Ian Fitzgibbon (Director), Kevin Barry (Writer), Grand Pictures   
  • ‘The Hole In The Ground’, Lee Cronin (Writer/Director), Stephen Shields (Writer), SP Films
  • ‘The Gee Gees’, David Kerr (Director), Kevin Barry & John Butler (Writers), Element Pictures

Fiction Creative Co-Production

  • ‘The Little Stranger’, Lenny Abrahamson (Director), Lucinda Coxon (Writer), Element Pictures: €350,000
  • ‘Vita & Virgina’, Chanya Button (Writer/Director) Eileen Atkins (Writer), Blinder Films: €200,000
  • ‘Dirty  God’ Sacha Polak  (Writer/Director), Susanne Farrell (Writer), SP Films: €150,000

Animation
Only one project has been funded under this subcategory: ‘Riona's Warriors’ to be directed by Niall Mooney and written by Alan Gilbey and Richie Conroy for Dancing Girl Productions, which has been awarded €200,000. Provisional offers went to the following:

  • ‘Alva And The Trolls’: Jamie Teehan (Director) Amy Stephenson & Shane Langan (Writers), Kavaleer Productions
  • ‘Ballybradden’, Jason Tammemagi & Graham Holbrook (Directors), Jason Tammemagi (Writer), Treehouse Republic           

Documentary
Jim Sheridan & Colm Quinn have teamed as directors on 'The Rocket' produced by Marcie Films and have received funding of €150,000.  A provisional offer has gone to Sé Merry Doyle’s ‘John Huston: Moby Dick’ for Loopline Films.

€75,000 has gone to both ‘The Man Who Dared’ for Marcus Robinson's project for Igloo Films and Brendan Byrne's 'In a Potter's Field' for Fine Point Films. €100,000 each has been awarded to the remaining two projects:

  • ‘Gaza: Out of the Ordinary’, Gary Keane (Director), Real Films: €100,000
  • ‘Venice Of The North’, Tom Burke (Director), Marcie Films: €100,000

Development Loans
Screenplay Development
‘Get The Boat’ co-written by Sarah Francis and Una Mullally has been awarded the highest amount in this section, with an award of €14,000.

Eight other projects have received funding of €12,000 each: ‘Silvia’ (Maeve McQuillan), ‘Ghost Train’ (Lee Cronin), ‘Dead Cities’ (Gavin Burke), ‘The Trouble With Charlie’ (Mark Doherty & Ruan Magan), ‘Day Zero’ (Claire Dix), ‘Succession’ (Francesca Harris), ‘After The Bomb’ (Alex Fegan) and ‘The Music Reader’ (Ian Power).  

Fiction Development
Under this lengthy subcategory, ‘Viva’ team Paddy Breathnach and Mark O’Halloran have reteamed for ‘Duck’, with Element Pictures Producing and have received an award of €50,000 in fiction development for their project.

Carmel Winters, the writer/director of ‘Float Like A Butterfly’ mentioned above, is also the writer of ‘The Story of Lucy Gault’, set to be directed by Pat O’Connor and produced by Parallel Film Productions. This project received €35,000 in fiction development funding.

An additional two projects have hit the €25,000 funding mark in this category, in the form of:

  • ‘The Life And Death of Sophie Stark’, Kirsten Sheridan (Writer/Director), Anna North (Writer), Marcie Films: €26,500
  • ‘Owned’, Phyllidia Lloyd (Director), Clare Dunne (Writer), Element Pictures: €25,000

International Television Drama Development
Only one project was awarded under this section; ‘Spanish Fly’ from writer Will Ferguson for Fastnet Films, which received €13,290.

Documentary Development
Nine projects received €15,000 each in funding under this section; ‘Henry Glassie: Folklife’ (Pat Collins for Harvest Films), ‘State of Exclusion’ (Tadhg O’Sullivan for inland Films), ‘Breaking Out’ (Michael McCormack for Silver Moonbeam Productions), ‘Piano Project’ (Gary Lennon for Gambit Picures), ‘A Short History of Decay’ (Sarah Shore for Magamedia), ‘The Last True Dandy in Ireland’ (Liam McGrath & Richard Curson Smith for Scratch Films), ‘Defenders’ (Kim Bartley for Underground Pictures), ‘Comeback’ (Ross Whitaker for True Films) and ‘Francesca’ (Oonagh Kearney for Marcie Films).

Distribution
‘The Secret Scripture’ (Jim Sheridan) has received €60,000 in distribution support, with a slightly less €50,000 going to ‘Handsome Devil’ (John Butler), €15,000 to ‘A Dark Song’ (Liam Gavin) and €10,000 each to ‘Lost in France (Niall McCann) and ‘Without Name’ (Lorcan Finnegan). Direct distribution funding of €15,000 has gone to ‘In Loco Parentis’ (Neasa Ní Chianain).
