IFB Announce Q3 2016 Funding Decisions

The Irish Film Board has announced the successful applicants for funding for the third quarter for fiction, animation, and documentary in development, production and distribution stages.

Some of the leading talent behind this year’s Irish titles on the international festival circuit and in the Irish box office are visible in the following awards.

Writer/Director Peter Foott for example, is set to follow up on his debut feature ‘The Young Offenders’ with ‘Joyriders’, for which he has received €12,000 in funding for screenplay development.

Development Funding
Also under development funding Director Lorcan Finnegan and Writer Garret Shanley’s recent ‘Without Name’, which also marked a feature debut and screened at the prestigious TIFF and BFI London Film Festivals this year. The pair have received funding of €11,000 for ‘Vivarium’ with Fantastic Films are attached.

€10,000 went to ‘The White Room’ for Ripple World Pictures, with Declan Recks (The Truth Commissioner) directing a script from Maggie Mitchell and Neal Rowlands. Reck’s ‘The Flag’ starring Pat Shortt released to Irish cinemas on October 14th.

The director behind the widely acclaimed ‘Bobby Sands: 66 Days’ Brendan J. Byrne as also received funding of €15,000 for his latest documentary project ‘One Million New Yorkers’, with Fine Point Films producing.

An impressive line-up of animation projects are also in development, with seven projects receiving funding of between €15,000 and €50,000. Oscar-nominated Tomm Moore (Song of the Sea) of Cartoon Saloon is set to co-direct ‘Wolf Walker’ with Ross Stewart, which is written by Will Collins and has received €50,000.

Four projects are in receipt of €20,000, with ‘Meddlers’ for Jam Media, ‘Spooklies’ for Mooshku, ‘I’ve Got A Time Travelling Monkey On My Back’ from Treehouse Republic and ‘Dorg Vandango’ for Cartoon Saloon.

Other significant development awards go to Naomi Sheridan for ‘Miss Emily’, which is produced by Element Pictures and received €26,500.

Production Funding
For projects under the production category, the most significant award has been given to Parallel Film Productions for ‘The Delinquent Season’, a fiction feature film directed and written by Mark O’Rowe (Debris), totalling €650,000.

Following this is ‘Cellar Door’ from Samson Films, which received €450,000 with a Writer/Director also attached in the form of Viko Nikci (Fading Away). ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ from Element Pictures has been awarded €200,000 with ‘The Lobster’ talent Yorgas Lanthimos and co-writer Efthimis Filippou attached.

Awards of €150,000 each have also been given to co-production projects, with Parallel Film Productions for ‘The Man Who Invented Christmas’ with Barhat Nalluri directing a script from Susan Coyne (501), and Fastnet Films with Writer/Director Farhad Safinia working on ‘The Professor and the Mad Man’, which stars Mel Gibson and Sean Penn.

Five provisional offers of commitment in production funding for this year also signals the volume and quality of work being produced in Ireland at present. These offers have been made to the following:

  • ‘Rose Plays Julie’, Samson Films, Christine Molloy & Joe Lawlor (Writer/Directors)
  • ‘Float Like a Butterfly’, Samson Films, Carmel Winters (Writer/Director)
  • ‘Trade’, Roads Entertainment, Hong Khaou (Director), Mark O’Halloran (Writer)
  • ‘Damo & Ivor’, Blue Ink Films, Rob Burke & Ronan Burke (Directors), Andy Quirke & Jules Coll (Writers)
  • Documentary ‘All The Numbers’, Black Sheep Productions, Ross Whitaker (Director)

Distribution Support
The number projects in receipt of distribution support have been increasing throughout the year, with eight in receipt of funding this quarter, five in Q2 2016 and a mere four in Q1 2016.

‘Strange Occurrances in a Small Irish Village’ from Aoife Kelleher (One Million Dubliners) is the only project is quarter in receipt of direct distribution funding, with an award of €10,000. Wildcard Distribution holds two of five projects in receipt of distribution support, with Element Distribution accounting for the remaining five.

‘Tiger Raid’ (Simon Dixon) and ‘Wild’ (Vivienne De Courcy) for Wildcard Distribution have received €10,000 and €22,500 respectively. For Element Distribution, ‘The Flag’ and ‘The Siege of Jadotville’ have been awarded €37,500 each, with €35,000 for ‘A Date For Mad Mary’ and €20,000 for ‘Mattress Men’.
