Two Northern Irish Shorts make it to Academy Award Shortlist

After 141 films were submitted this year for the live-action short film Academy Award, ten live-shorts have been selected for consideration for the Oscar. The shortlist was chosen by the Academy’s short films and feature animation branch reviewing committee. Branch members will now select three to five nominees from among the 10 titles on the shortlist.

‘SLR’, directed by Stephen Fingleton and produced by Matthew James Wilkinson (Stigma Films) was one of the chosen short films. ‘SLR’ stars Liam Cunningham, Ryan McParland, May Wren and Richard Dormer, and was shot in Northern Ireland. The short follows a man (Cunningham) who is obsessed with voyeur photography and then makes a shocking discovery.

Director Fingleton is currently in post-production on his debut feature, ‘The Survivalist’, which he also wrote. The post-apocalypse film stars Martin McCann, Mia Goth and Olwen Fouere and was also shot in Northern Ireland.

Also of Irish interest, ‘Boogaloo and Graham’ is being considered for the Live-Action Short Oscar too. Directed by Michael Lennox and written by Ronan Blaney, the short film was produced by Belfast-based Out of Orbit Ltd and stars Martin McCann. The film follows two young boys who are given two baby chicks to look after. Lennox's debut feature 'A Patch of Fog' enters production this weekend.

Richard Williams, Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Screen, said: “We are bursting with pride in Michael Lennox, Stephen Fingleton, Ronan Blaney and Brian Falconer. To get two films on the list of 10 nominated for an Oscar is pretty special, the more so because as well as these wonderful short films, Michael and Stephen both have their first feature films in production right now. These are exciting times and we appreciate that this is the result of tremendous support given to the screen sector here by the British Film Institute, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Invest Northern Ireland and DCAL. With all of their support, we’re creating an eco system that can allow our finest talents to fly.”

The other nominated films are:

  • ‘Aya’, directed by Oded Binnun and Mihal Brezis (Chasis Films)
  • ‘Baghdad Messi’, directed by Sahim Omar Kalifa and produced by Kobe Van Steenberghe (a team productions)

  • ‘Butter Lamp’ (‘La Lampe Au Beurre De Yak’), directed by Hu Wei and produced by Julien Féret, producer (AMA Productions)
  • ‘Carry On’, directed by Yatao Li (Rochester Institute of Technology)
  • ‘My Father’s Truck’, directed by Maurício Osaki (Lupi Filmes)
  • ‘Parvaneh’, directed by Talkhon Hamzavi and Stefan Eichenberger, producer (Zurich University of Arts)
  • ‘The Phone Call’, directed by Mat Kirkby and written by James Lucas (RSA Films)
  • ‘Summer Vacation’ (‘Chofesh Gadol’), directed by Tal Granit and Sharon Maymon (GREENproductions)

Branch screenings will be held in Los Angeles, London, New York and San Francisco in December. The nominations will be announced on January 15th ahead of the 87th Academy Awards ceremony on February 22nd.
