Irish actor Brendan Gleeson has been nominated for a European Film Award for his performance in the dark comedy ‘Calvary’.
The 2014 European Film Awards will be held on December 13th in Riga, European Capital of Culture 2014.
Eoin Duffy’s award-winning animated short ‘The Missing Scarf’ and Belfast-set ‘71’ had previously been nominated for an award in the category of Best Short Film and European Discovery respectively, which is chosen by festivals rather than the academy.
Brendan Gleeson was nominated in the category of ‘Best European Actor’ for his acclaimed portrayal of Father James Lavelle – a performance that has already won him the 2014 IFTA Best Actor.
Belfast set-thriller ‘71’ meanwhile was nominated in the category of European Discovery earlier this year. ‘71’ is directed by Yann Demange, written by Gregory Burke and starring Jack O’Connell, Barry Keoghan, David Wilmot, Killian Scott and Charlie Murphy.
Irish animated short ‘The Missing Scarf’ has also been nominated – in the category of ‘Best European Short’. The short has already had an impressive year amassing numerous international awards including wins at the San Francisco Film Festival, Savannah Film Festival, Valladolid Film Festival, and many others. It garnered awards nationally too at the Galway Film Fleadh, Cork Film Festival and the Foyle Film Festival. It was also nominated for Best Short at this year’s IFTAs and was shortlisted for the 2014 Academy Award for Best Animated Short.
The awards for the technical categories have already been decided, but the rest will handed out on December 13th in Riga, European Capital of Culture 2014. See the full list of nominations for the 2014 European Film Awards here.
