Steven Spielberg will be producing and directing what is an as-yet-untitled new Cold War thriller for Dreamworks, and none other than Irish actress Eve Hewson has been attached to the project. Deadline.com first reported the news that Hewson is in talks to join the project and also reported that production is set to commence in September with shooting on location in New York and Berlin.
Actors Alan Alda (‘M*A*S*H*’) and Billy Magnussen (‘Boardwalk Empire’) are also in talks to join the film, while Mark Rylance is already aboard. Amy Ryan (‘The Wire’, ‘Gone Baby Gone’) and Tom Hanks will play the leads.
The film will be based on the true story of CIA attorney James Donovan (Hanks), an attorney who finds himself in the middle of the Cold War when the CIA sends him to negotiate the release of American U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers after he is shot down over Soviet airspace. Amy Ryan will play Donovan’s wife but there are no details at present on the character Hewson would play.
Eve Hewson, who is the daughter of Bono and Ali Hewson, made her big screen debut in ‘The 27 Club’ and has since starred in ‘This Must Be the Place’ opposite Sean Penn, ‘Blood Ties’ starring Clive Owen, and most recently, ‘Enough Said’. She also stars in TV series ‘The Knick’ in a highly-anticipated performance.
20th Century Fox is co-financing the film with DreamWorks, and will distribute internationally while Disney will handle domestic distribution. Spielberg will direct and produce the film with Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger. The executive producers are Adam Somner and Daniel Lupi. Joel and Ethan Coen wrote the script based on an original script by Matt Charman.
The film is slated for release October 16, 2015.
