RTÉ Calls for Comedy, Talent Development & Music Programming
31 Mar 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
'Damo & Ivor' have been one of RTÉ Two's most successful comedy outputs in recent years
A new department has been set up in RTÉ Commissioning, which is responsible for the commission of all comedy output for RTÉ One, RTÉ Two, and online content. The department will oversee all comedy formats, including panel comedy shows, scripted comedy, sitcom, satire, sketch shows, studio comedy and stand-up shows.

The department will also be responsible for developing new and current presenting and production talents, for example, though the existing ‘Reality Bites’ documentary strand. The department will also handle music output for both of RTÉ’s channels, as well as on RTÉ’s digital platforms.

For comedy, RTÉ Commissioning is now looking for proposals for ideas that can build on the success of shows such as ‘Damo & Ivor’, ‘Mrs. Brown’s Boys’, ‘The Mario Rosenstock Show’, ‘The Walshes’ and ‘The Savage Eye’. Coherent development phases, projects that maximise RTÉ’s cross-platform offering, as well as practical budgets and finance plans, will be prioritised.

RTÉ One output hopes to balance its heavier news, current affairs and factual programmes with lighter, contemporary, family-friendly comedy with strong writing and a confident, warm tone. The slot on offer is 6x30’ for June 2014 on Sunday at 8.30pm and/or 9.30 pm. For the slot, budgets will be project-dependent and scripted comedy will be at a higher tariff than other forms of comedy.

There are also various ‘contestable’ slots on offer for RTÉ One programming, of 30 minutes in length with a budget of between €30k and €50k per episode. Specific slots available for contest across 2014 include Tuesdays at 7pm, Sundays at 8.30pm, Thursdays at 8.30pm, and Tuesdays at 9.35pm.

RTÉ Two is looking for brave comedy aimed at an aged 15-34 audience that will utilise the multi-platform viewing habits of young people. Shows such as ‘Damo & Ivor’ and ‘The Republic of Telly’ are given as examples to the tone required of the proposed formats.

RTÉ Comedy is looking foremost for a project to play in the 9.30pm and 10pm Monday evening slot to broadcast as part of the channel’s ‘Monday Night comedy’ strand, which ‘The Centre’ is currently a part of. The deadline for proposals for the slot is 5pm, Friday 2 May 2014, with an expected delivery of the project for November 2014.

Popular documentary programming is also being sought for RTÉ Two, with 10x52’ dedicated ‘Reality Bites’ slots available for RTÉ Two for 2014. The channel also has several ‘contestable’ slots, varying between half hour and hour long durations, for popular documentary proposals, formatted factual entertainment, comedy formats.

RTÉ One, RTÉ Two and RTÉ Digital are also on the lookout for creative proposals for music programming, as shows like ‘Other Voices’, ‘Fleadh Cheoil’,‘For One Night Only’ and ‘Guth na nGael’ have proven themselves popular with viewers already. The preference will be for low cost or fully funded music programmes, as will proposals with a digital component.
