Sunday, December 20th marks the beginning of a brand new TG4 music series, ‘Anam an Amhráin’ where award winning singer Iarla Ó Lionáird bring a lively rearrangement of some well known Irish songs. Each performance will be enhanced by specially created animations included to visualise the story of each of the featured popular tunes.
The series is co-produced for TG4 by Sónta Teo, an independent production company based in Connemara and Cartoon Saloon, the Irish animation studio behind the animated hit, ‘The Secret of Kells’.
‘Cúilín Dualach’, a previous innovative collaboration between these two companies, garnered a host of national and international awards including an IFTA award in the category of Best Animation.
Iarla Ó Lionáird has performed worldwide as a solo performer and as lead singer with the Afro Celt Sound System at venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, The Royal Opera House in London, at The Sydney Opera House and in Cape Town, Rome and Tokyo. In this series, he is staying much closer to home as he journeys through Ireland to meet other popular singers to watch as they can breathe new life into some old favourites in performances that will form part of a totally new creative version of the song when fused with the new animations.
Throughout the five programmes of the series which will all screen on TG4 starting on Sunday, December 20th at 10pm, Iarla catches up with the likes of West Kerry native, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, lead singer with the famed group Danú who sings ‘Gréasaí Brógand’, Declan O’Rourke who records a new version of the humourous ‘An Damhán Alla’, Paul Brady who sings one of the country’s favourite national school songs ‘Óró sé do bheatha ‘bhaile’, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, lead singer with Altan, who records ‘Dúin do Shúil’ and Damien Dempsey and Róisín Elsafty who perform a duet of the rollicking ‘Cailleach an Airgid’.
‘Anam an Amhráin’ is directed and produced by Seán Ó Cualáin (Mairtín Ó Cadhain: King of Words) and also produced by Éamonn Ó Cualáin (editor, Mairtín Ó Cadhain: King of Words), who was also editor of the series, and Ross Murray (Backwards Boy). The series is lensed by Réamonn Mc Donncha.
