A selection of Ireland’s finest short films from the past several years will be showcased at the 19th edition of Concorto International Short Film Festival, which runs from August 22nd to 29th.

Concorto 2020 will take place live in the beautiful scenery of Parco Raggio, in the open air, ensuring all required safety measures against Covid-19 are adhered to.

“At Concorto, we believe the festival is a great opportunity for people to get together again, although in a different way,” Festival Programmer, Virginia Carolfi told IFTN.

Digital access to the arts has become increasingly popular over the last few months, highlighting how important culture is in our lives, especially in such dire and trying times,” she continued. “However, we must not forget the social dimension of culture: we want to promote cinema as a way to get together and gain insight into the world we live in."

All sections of the festival are confirmed, along with the main competition, while two special sections will be dedicated to selected short films from Ireland and Lithuania.

Speaking about Ireland’s inclusion as part of the 2020 Focus, Carolfi told IFTN:
'The reason I picked Ireland is a very personal one; I have lived in Ireland for a while, in a house in the middle of a bog, and I remember that time of my life as one of the best I have ever lived. An intense experience that slowly but steadily changed my life.
“In the focus I have tried to replicate, or better, to sketch what I glimpsed during my Irish life: that feeling of past, present and future all mixed together in a culture so strangely familiar, full of contradictions and rough allure. I have given preference to small personal stories, universal in their meaning, Irish in their being.'

Curated by Festival Programmer, Virginia Carolfi, the Irish Focus is realised in collaboration with Galway Film Fleadh’s Shorts Programmer, Eibh Collins, who recently spoke with IFTN about the intricacies of curating a festival programme. The Focus Irish section promises to bring a vibrant flavour of Ireland through an eclectic mix of some of the best short films release nationally over the past several years.

Concorto Film Festival is one of my yearly festival highlights,” Eibh Collins told IFTN.

“I always recommend it to every filmmaker asking for festival guidance, there is a great mix of industry and die-hard short film lovers, all meeting in a beautiful outdoor park for a collaboration of friends, food and wine.”

“So it has been a goal of mine to get to share some Irish shorts with this audience for years. I am so excited to be able to help Virginia and the team with the selection, I am heartbroken that myself and the filmmakers can't join them this year but there is something lovely about knowing even if we can't travel that far that at least our films and our culture still can.”
