Prime Time Investigates travelled to Nigeria to meet with some deportees from Ireland.
They met Iyabo and Elizabeth, two mothers from due to be deported while their children were in school. Iyabo has a 5 and 8 year old son. The oldest boy did not come home from school that day and she was taken without him and has not seen him since. Elizabeth left three children behind who are all in hiding in Ireland. The two mothers are living in Lagos in a two-room house with six other people.
Nketchi and her three children had been living in Castleblayney, County Monaghan. They said they couldn’t return to their hometown as the youngest daughter of the family is due to face female circumcision. Now the family lives in a one room building in Lagos and currently has no source of income.
This programme examines the reality of life for the people we deport and asks whether our asylum system is working as well as it is supposed to do.
