On the 27th October 1980, Republican Prisoners in Long Kesh embarked on a Hunger Strike after spending four years on the 'Blanket and No Wash' Protest. The Hunger Strike was to last 53 days with an eventual misunderstanding arising between the prisoners and the English government at it's conclusion, leaving the prisoners in the same conditions as before the Hunger Strike. The prisoners concluded that they had no other option left to achieve their original aims but to undertake another Hunger Strike. This time, 27 year old Bobby Sands was to begin the strike which was to ultimately lead to his death, and the subsequent deaths of 9 of his fellow prisoners.
