A Dubliner returning from World War Two finds unemployment and near-starvation in the Dublin tenements. He refuses help from an old friend, a priest, and finds himself in a pub where he meets an embittered ex-IRA man. They soon team up in an irregular partnership and rob a jewellery store. Detectives search the city for the two men with an eventual chase across the rooftops of a Dublin hotel.
