The film traces the development of the revolutionary movement in Ireland between 1896 and 1918, exclusively using contemporary film footage (most of which had to be found outside Ireland). The film divides its treatment of the era into three sections: Awakening (1896 - 1915), The Rising(1916) and The Dawning of the Day (1917 -1918).
