Young Critics Wanted for Cinemagic Festival Jury
18 Apr 2012 : By Eva Hall
Laura Whitmore launching Cinemagic
The Coca-Cola Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People is calling on aspiring film critics to apply to the Cinemagic Jury for a chance to review a series of short films. The Cinemagic team will be on hand to explain the basics of film critiquing to 20 lucky applicants aged between 12-18-years-old.

The festival was officially launched by Bray-native and MTV presenter Laura Whitmore on Sunday April 15. It will take place between May 14 and 20 with workshops held in various locations around Dublin.

The Cinemagic Jury members will have the chance to have their own reviews published online on the Cinemagic and Film Ireland websites. Juries will be divided into two sections: 12-14 year olds will meet from 10am-12.30pm and 15-18 year olds will meet from 1.pm-4pm at Filmbase in Dublin.

Cinemagic CEO Joan Burney Keatings described the jury panel as a “fantastic opportunity” for young film critics to “come together and make new friends with others sharing a passion for film. They will get the opportunity to view short films from around the world and learn how to critique them.”

Other highlights of this year’s festival include a talk from ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ director Brian Kirk, Talent Lab workshops hosted by successful actors such as Suranne Jones (Coronation Street), and attendees such as ‘X Factor’ host Dermot O’Leary and film historian Dr. Kevin Rockett.

Maire Campbell, Director of Public Affairs and Communications Coca-Cola HBC Ireland Ltd, expressed her delight at working with Cinemagic again: “This year’s festival will provide participants with the opportunity to gain exciting and practical experience in many arts based disciplines, using the magic of film to inspire and fuel creativity.”

To apply for a position on the Cinemagic Jury, write or email an imaginative letter of 300 word max explaining why you should be a member of the jury. Visit here for more details on this year’s festival.
