Netflix's Steve starring Cillian Murphy wraps production

Cillian Murphy’s latest project for Netflix as star and producer, Steve, has completed filming in the UK and debuted a first look image, per Deadline.

The film is described as a reimagining of the Sunday Times bestselling novel Shy by Max Porter and, in addition to starring, Murphy has produced the project with Alan Moloney under their new Big Things Films banner. Netflix will distribute the film worldwide.

Big Things Films and Netflix have shared a first look image from the set featuring Murphy, co-star Jay Lycurgo, and author Max Porter.

The film is directed by Tim Mielants, who also helmed Murphy’s upcoming Claire Keegan adaptation Small Things Like These, which premiered at Berlin Film Festival and is due for release via Lionsgate later in 2024.

Set in the mid-1990s, “Steve follows a pivotal day in the life of headteacher Steve and his students at a last-chance reform college amidst a world that has forsaken them. As Steve fights to protect the college’s integrity and impending closure, we witness him grappling with his own mental health. In parallel to Steve’s struggles, we meet Shy (Lycurgo), a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence.”

Murphy recently won the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in Cillian Murphy’s blockbuster drama Oppenheimer. Following Small Things Like These and Steve, Murphy will next be seen in a Peaky Blinders movie for Netflix, and Blood Runs Coal, based on Mark A Bradley’s book about the murder of union leader Joseph Yablonski, for Universal.
