Irish Productions Selected to Screen at 2018 BFI London Film Festival
31 Aug 2018 : Nathan Griffin
The BFI London Film Festival has announced that Element Pictures’ ‘Dublin Oldschool’ & Treasure Entertainment’s ‘Papi Chulo’ will have their UK premiere alongside ‘Rosie’ & ‘The Favourite’ at the 62nd BFI London Film Festival, which takes place October 10th-21st, 2018.

Irish short films ‘BoySaint’, which picked up Best Cinematography at the Galway Film Fleadh, and ‘CatCalls’ will also screen at the London Festival.

For Treasure & Element, this follows the recent news that John Butler’s ‘Papi Chulo’ & Paddy Breathnach’s ‘Rosie’ will screen at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) next month alongside five other Irish titles including ‘The Dig’, ‘Greta’, ‘Float Like A Butterfly’, ‘Black 47’ and ‘Vita & Virginia’.

Speaking about the selection, Dublin Oldschool director Dave Tynan said:

"I'm over the moon that we're showing Dublin Oldschool to an international audience for the first time at BFI London Film Festival. The festival is a showcase for work by so many directors I admire. Screening our film alongside theirs is a privilege."

‘Dublin Oldschool’ tells the story of Jason, a wannabe DJ, on a drug-fuelled trip through the streets of Dublin as he stumbles from one session to another. Somewhere between the DJs, decks, and drug busts he stumbles across a familiar face from the past, his brother Daniel.  Daniel, an educated heroin addict, is living on the streets. The brothers haven’t seen or spoken to each other in years but over a lost weekend they reconnect and reminisce over raves, tunes and their troubled past. Two brothers living very different lives might have more in common than they think.

‘Dublin Oldschool’ is directed by Dave Tynan and co-written by Dave Tynan and Emmet Kirwan, produced by Mike Donnelly, Dave Leahy with Liam Ryan as associate producer, Rory Gilmartin serving as executive producer for Element Pictures and Lesley McKimm as executive producer for the Irish Film Board. Production support for the project came from the Irish Film Board and Windmill Lane Pictures.

Directed by John Butler, ‘Papi Chulo’, sees Sean — a lonely TV weatherman — drive past a middle-aged Latino migrant worker standing outside Home Depot looking for work. He decides to hire this kind-looking man — to be his friend. Sean is young, gay and white; Ernesto, portly, straight and married. Despite having nothing in common, they build sort of a friendship based on sign language, until Sean becomes consumed by a deep and obsessional attraction. The film will receive its European premiere at the festival and screen in the Love strand.

Cian Speers' ‘BoySaint’ follows two adolescent boys as they become aware of their budding sexuality and uncover the pain and longing of the human heart. The film was directed by Tom Speers, produced by Cian Speers, and cinematography by Kevin Treacy. Director Tom Speers picked up Best First Short Fiction Award, while Treacy was awarded the Donal Gilligan award for best cinematography in a short film.

Katie Dolan’s short film ‘Catcalls’ will also screen at the festival, featuring in LFF’s Reel Horrorshow line up. The short follows a man who cruises around late at night looking for something. He pulls in to ask two young girls for directions — only to flash them to get a cheap thrill. Unfortunately, he has picked the wrong girls. ‘Catcalls’ takes the power back and the predator becomes the prey. Written and directed by Dolan, the short film is produced by Aoife Kelly, with Fiona Kinsella serving as executive producer.

‘Dublin Oldschool’ will be available on DVD and On-Demand from October 26th.

The 62nd BFI London Film Festival takes place October 10th-21st, 2018.
