Stephen Burke's 'Maze' Acquired by Netflix – Releases Tuesday, May 22nd
21 May 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Netflix has acquired the VoD rights to Stephen Burke’s critically acclaimed thriller, ‘MAZE’. Written and directed by Stephen Burke and produced by Jane Doolan and Brendan Byrne, ‘Maze’ will be available to stream on the Netflix platform (UK & Ireland) from Tuesday May 22nd.

This follows the films hugely successful theatrical run in autumn 2017. Released by Lionsgate, the film was last year’s most successful Irish feature film at both the Irish and Northern Irish box office, achieving an all-Ireland gross of over 1 million dollars.

Starring Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (‘Avengers: Infinity War’), Barry Ward (‘Jimmy’s Hall’) and Martin McCann (‘The Survivalist’), ‘Maze’ opened at number 3 in Ireland and had a ten-week cinema run, spending five of these in the Irish Top Ten. Distribution rights have since been sold to over 15 territories worldwide.

‘Maze’ is based on the true story of the 1983 mass breakout of 38 IRA prisoners from HMP Maze high-security prison in Northern Ireland.  As Larry Marley (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor), the chief architect of the escape, schemes his way towards pulling off this feat, he comes into contact with prison warder, Gordon Close (Barry Ward). Initially Larry and Gordon are confirmed enemies, born on opposite sides of Northern Ireland’s political divide, but when Larry realises that Gordon may be unwittingly useful for his escape plan, a slow seduction begins. Larry intends to use and manipulate Gordon in order to get closer to his goal but what follows is a tense and intriguing drama in which an unlikely relationship is forged between two enemies that will have far reaching consequences for both of them.

‘Maze’ is a Mammoth Films and Cyprus Avenue Production, in co-production with Filmgate Films, Sweden and was financed by The Irish Film Board, RTE, BAI, Film Vast, Windmill Lane, Cork regional funding and Irish tax incentives for the film industry.

Another Mammoth Films production ‘Citizen Lane’, produced by Jane Doolan, directed by Thaddeus O’Sullivan, written by Mark O’Halloran and starring Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Hugh Lane opened in Irish cinemas on Friday 18th May to critical acclaim.
