The Irish Film and Television Academy is delighted to announce that Irish band The Blizzards, headed by frontman Bressie, will exclusively reveal their new single and video for One Good Thing as part of the the 2020 Virtual IFTA Awards, which will be broadcast on Virgin Media One, at 10pm on Sunday, October 18th.

The new-look Awards Show will see a line-up of Hollywood Guests presenting the coveted Irish Academy award to Ireland’s leading screen talents.

As part of this amazing and unique TV experience, The Blizzard’s single One Good Thing, directed by IFTA award winner Terry McMahon will reveal a spectacular song written about our current time. When everything in the world feels like it’s going against you, the song focuses on how it’s always possible to find and be grateful for that one good thing that will bring you back out of the dark (see details below).

Speaking about the inclusion in the IFTA awards ceremony, Bressie, The Blizzards frontman and mental health advocate said: “Our industry has never known a time like it. So much is out of our control, but the one thing we do still control is our creative output. As a band,we wanted to try use this time to explore creative new avenues for the band.

“We’ve always wanted to work with Terry. He has a unique ability to remove you from your comfort zone. We are really humbled that the One Good Thing video and song resonated with IFTA, and they have given us the opportunity to show it on such a prestigious platform”.

Speaking about his involvement in the video, IFTA award winner Terry McMahon added: “When public gatherings are banned, dissent is censored, and music, art, and culture are choked into acquiescent silence, then perhaps the most subversive act of rebellion is to reach out and do one good thing for another human being.”.

IFTA CEO Áine Moriarty said: “In these difficult times, it is heartening to see great musicians and filmmakers come together in such an artistic and creative way to tell our stories.  Bressie is such an outstanding advocate for mental health, especially in these difficult times, and this beautiful performance and visual work with Terry, where music, film, and storytelling are merged into one, is something we are delighted to showcase”

The One Good Thing music video was shot in the lakes surrounding Mullingar and the opening sequence depicts the central character on Lady’s Island in Lough Owel, searching for her purpose, and lost as to what that is. She finds a deserted boat tethered to the island and rows as if her life depended on it. As the video progresses, she rediscovers her meaning and by the end is filled with hope, finding her life’s purpose and being reunited with her band mates. Passionately performing together, they project a message of reassurance that despite the impact being faced by the creative industry, it will bounce back brighter and more united than ever before.

The 2020 IFTA Awards will be broadcast on Virgin Media One at 10pm this Sunday, October 18th, and hosted by Deirdre O’Kane. Sunday night’s IFTA Awards will be a star-studded affair with high-profile international Guest Presenters taking the time to participate and say hello to Ireland and to present a key award on the night.

Heading up the line-up is one of the most influential and renowned Hollywood Directors, Martin Scorsese, who will present Best Irish Film.  He will be joined on the Awards Show by a host of guest presenters that include Pierce Brosnan, Liam Neeson, Ruth Negga, Ciatriona Balfe, Chris O’Dowd, Star Wars leading lady Daisy Ridley, Normal People’s young Stars, Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones and the fun-loving Derry Girls among many others, who will be taking part in the Virtual Awards.
