Liam Cunningham to receive inaugural ICCL Lifetime Contribution Award.
Ahead of festival proceedings getting underway, VMDIFF has revealed actor and humanitarian Liam Cunningham as the recipient of the inaugural ICCL Lifetime Contribution Award.

The Game of Thrones star will receive his award at a ceremony in Dublin’s RHA on March 6th.

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) and Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival will announce the winners of the ICCL Human Rights in Film Award on March 8th. Nominees include festival films Herself, Street Leagues, Hearts and Bones, Santiago Italia and Balloon. The awards celebrate films that showcase human rights as a force for good in the world and allow audiences to learn about the many forms activism can take. The judging panel chaired by Ailbhe Smyth also included Brendan Courtney, Andrea Horan, Bulelani Mfaco, and Aoife Kelleher.

Festival audiences will get an exclusive first look at Promising Young Woman. Emerald Fennell’s (Killing Eve) directorial debut is a new darkly comic revenge thriller, starring Academy Award® nominee Carey Mulligan as Cassie, who everyone thinks of as a promising young woman until a mysterious event abruptly derails her future.  But nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be: she’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night.  Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling and wildly entertaining story. The film screens at the IFI at 4 pm on March 8th, over a month before its release in Irish cinemas on April 17th.

As part of the outreach programme, Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival and access>CINEMA, supported by the Arts Council, are presenting special preview screenings of Cine4’s Irish-language feature Arracht, with a national tour visiting six regional venues including Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire; Garter Lane Arts Centre, Waterford; The Model, Sligo; Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge; Droichead Arts Centre @ The ARC Cinema, Drogheda and Club Scannán Sailearna, Inverin, Co. Galway. Film talent will attend the screenings.

Additional guests attending the festival include Brid Brennan who shines in Anne Devlin, Pat Murphy’s ground-breaking remastered historical drama about the woman commonly known as Robert Emmet’s housekeeper and the real Ditte Hansen and Louise Mieritz from their eponymous Ditte & Louise about two middle-aged actresses and close friends who decide to take their comedy show on the road. Not having achieved what they hoped for in their careers so far, the friends decide to kick back - but is the world ready for their new-found rebellion? Don’t miss this telling and wryly observed comedy that was a big hit in its native Denmark.

Presenting the best in Irish and international film, the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival opens today with Lorcan Finnegan’s superb Vivarium starring Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots. This compelling sci-fi suspense thriller centred on a young couple looking for a starter home is steeped in satire on suburbia and parenthood. Vivarium premiered in Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews, and Lorcan Finnegan and Imogen Poots will introduce the film to the Irish audience.

The Festival will welcome luminaries from the world of film including Charlie Kaufman, Bill Nighy (Kindness of Strangers), Barry Keoghan (Calm With Horses), Bob Geldof (Citizens of Boomtown), Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Rialto), Orla Brady and Ann Skelly (Rose Plays Julie); Clare Dunne and Conleth Hill (Herself) and Trine Dyrholm (Queen of Hearts).
