Cartoon Saloon's Wolfwalkers Joins Annecy International Animated Film Festival Line-Up
16 Jun 2020 : Nathan Griffin
Wolfwalkers
New animated film from multiple Academy Award-nominated studios Cartoon Saloon and Melusine Productions, created and directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, to debut around the world later this year as part of Apple’s premium film line-up.

Apple’s Wolfwalkers, a new animated film is joining the 2020 Annecy International Film Festival programme for a special, virtual sneak peek event. A first look at the film’s hand-crafted animation process will be showcased in the Work in Process Feature Films section at the renowned, world-class festival for animation ahead of its global debut in theatres and on Apple TV+ later this year.

Speaking about the news with IFTN, two-time Academy Award-nominee Tomm Moore said:

“We are always excited to show our work in progress at Annecy and have done so for all our movies so far. The Annecy audience is very discerning so their opinion and reaction matter a lot to us.

“This year it's online so we will miss the buzz of the Petit Salle and the vibe of mixing with our peers, but on the other hand much more people can see the WIP materials we are sharing and that’s exciting in its own way.”

Wolfwalkers follows Robyn Goodfellowe, a young apprentice hunter who journeys to Ireland with her father in a time of superstition and magic to wipe out the last wolf pack. While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumoured to have the ability to transform into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the Wolfwalkers and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

The film is directed by Moore (Song of the Sea, The Secret of the Kells) and Stewart (The Secret of Kells), and written by Will Collins (Song of the Sea). Nora Twomey, Paul Young, and Stéphan Roelants serve as producers.

Apple acquired the rights to Wolfwalkers, and the film will stream around the world exclusively on Apple TV+, following a theatrical run.

Wolfwalkers will join a growing slate of premium, Apple Original films from award-winning storytellers including Greyhound, a new and inspiring action-packed film starring and written by Tom Hanks; On the Rocks starring Bill Murray, Rashida Jones and directed by Sofia Coppola; official 2020 Sundance Selection and SXSW Louis Black Lone Star Award recipient, Boys State; and critically acclaimed films now streaming, including Beastie Boys Story, The Banker, and Cinema for Peace International Green Film Award-winner The Elephant Queen.

An official Ireland-Luxembourg co-production, Wolfwalkers was produced with the participation of Value & Power Culture Communications Co, FIS/Screen Ireland, Film Fund Luxembourg, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, RTE, Canal +, OCS and the Pole Image Magelis, Charente Region Fund.
