Creative Europe Programme (2021-2027)
Minister Catherine Martin has welcomed the launch of the European Commission’s decision to increase the total programme budget to €2.44 billion over the next seven years in an effort to support the cultural and creative sectors in Europe, an increase of 63% compared with the previous programme.

I encourage the culture, audiovisual and media sectors in Ireland to fully engage with the funding, partnership, training and networking opportunities presented by the Creative Europe Programme 2021-2027,” said Minister Martin.

“The Programme offers not alone funding to support the recovery and sustainability of these vital sectors of our society but also the important opportunities to achieve closer co-operation with partner organisations across Europe,” added Minister Martin. “I am also pleased to see the inclusion of schemes to support a free and pluralistic media environment and the emphasis placed on cross cutting objectives to support gender equality, greening, inclusivity and diversity.”

The new cycle (2021-2027) will also follow the adoption of the work programme for the first year of the Creative Europe 2021-2027 programme.

In 2021, Creative Europe will allocate an significant budget of around €300 million to help professionals and artists from all cultural sectors to collaborate across disciplines and borders, in order to find more opportunities and to reach new audiences.

The adoption lays the foundations for the first calls for proposals under the new programme. These calls will be open to all organisations active in the relevant cultural and creative sectors.

Irish organisations can apply to avail of the €300 million funding which is to be allocated in 2021 to schemes across the cultural, audiovisual and news media sectors with EU co-financing rates for some schemes as high as 80%.

Ireland has already achieved many successes through the previous Creative Europe programme 2014-2020 with over €13 million awarded to Irish audiovisual companies across the Film, Documentary, Animation, TV, and Video Games sectors, and €5 million to cultural and artistic organisations.

I would really encourage organisations to examine the various schemes under the new Creative Europe Programme and apply to this Programme which has provided such huge benefits and opportunities for the many previous successful applicants from Ireland,” added Minister Martin.

Audiovisual recipients have included Cartoon Saloon for Wolfwalkers, Element Pictures for The Killing of a Scared Deer, Fantastic Films for Sea Fever and Vivarium and Dead Pan Productions for TV series Dead Still. Cultural and artistic recipients have included The Ark children’s cultural centre for The Big Bang Festival, Waterford Walls for Murals for Communities, Blue Teapot Theatre Company for Trasna na Líne and the Glucksman Gallery for Voyage Inside a Blind Experience.

'It has been a very strong seven years for the Irish audiovisual industry,” said Orla Clancy, Creative Europe Desk Ireland – MEDIA Office. “We’re honoured to be in a position to be able to help the industry tell their stories to audiences across the world. It’s wonderful to see so many strong creative projects coming to life with the support of MEDIA. We look forward to the next Creative Europe programme and to supporting the Irish audiovisual sector for years to come.”

Within Creative Europe, the MEDIA sub-programme supports the development and distribution of films and audiovisual works with international appeal, in Europe and beyond. It contributes to the nurturing of talents, and manages targeted actions to enhance media literacy, pluralism, and freedom. The programme will continue to promote European cultural and linguistic diversity.

Creative Europe MEDIA has invested almost €2 million in the audiovisual and Video Games sectors in the West of Ireland with half a million invested in Gaeltacht companies. We hope to build on this strong foundation in the next Programme,” added Eibhlín Ní Mhunghaile, Creative Europe Desk MEDIA Office Galway.

The cultural and creative sectors have always been a rich facet of European life, contributing not only to Europe's social cohesion and diversity but also to Europe's economy representing 4.2% of the EU's total GDP and 3.7% of the EU's workforce.
