Digital Biscuit 2014 in Review
19 Mar 2014 : Aisling Newton
Over two days at this year’s Digital Biscuit event audiences got the chance to mingle with world renowned directors and producers as well as experiencing the latest cutting-edge animation technology.

Birch Hamilton, director of the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland, began proceedings by delivering a speech to officially open the 2nd Digital Biscuit and KinoPlay.

Animation fanatics were pleased to see Brown Bag’s Brian Gilmore and Cartoon Saloon’s Tom Moore talk to audiences about the company’s development and the introduction of 3D animation as well as a fully computerised set-up. ‘Song of the Sea’ was screened to audiences in the Paccar Theatre.

Spotlight-Denmark, featuring Camilla Hammerich, Maria Schmidt Olesen, and Christian Fonnesbech, spoke with Leslie McKimm about her work as producer on the smash-hit show ‘Borgen’, while Schmidt Olesen gave the audience a look into her work as a Commissing Editor with New Danish Screen. Fonnesbech also talked about his game ‘Cloud Chamber’—an interactive trans-media project that combines gaming, social media, and film.

The Works, a series of interactive workshops, both entertained and informed the crowds. These included a showcase of Final Cut Pro X from Alex Snelling, an overview of shooting in 6K from RED, Adobe, and HP, and a guide on character development from Glen Southern. Casting director Maureen Hughes was also on hand to give actors tips on securing an audition.

Damini Kumar gave a keynote speech on innovation and Nick Meaney talked about how his company Epagogix uses algorithms to gauge the box office success of screenplays in pre-production. Joe Marks of Disney Research spoke about his involvement in an initiative to encourage an entrepreneurial nature through technology.

A highlight for film fans came in the form of Jim Sheridan who took to the stage in the Paccar Theatre to discuss his career along with director Alan Taylor. Irish director Stephen Bradley also joined Sheridan and Taylor via Skype interview.

Other speakers at the two-day event included Grainne Humphreys, director of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, Philip and Maria Einstein, Richard Glynn (Ship Antics), Courtney Price (The Foundry) and Jamie Wilksinson spoke about VHX and the revolution in indie distribution.

Digital Biscuit’s partner companies entertained audiences that passed through the Science Gallery with an array of technology, displays, and screenings. Highlights included the ARRI AMIRA, the Nikon exhibition, Sigmedia’s 3D projector, the ISC’s expo, Wacom’s workdesk and tablet demo, and the Drone Camera that was half-robot and half-camera.
