The 1st John Ford Ireland Film Symposium takes place on June 7-10th. An initiative of the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) in association with the Ford Estate in US and supported by the Department of Arts, the annual event will be an international platform to honour and learn from the legacy of John Ford, one of the greatest American filmmakers of all time.

As part of the Film Symposium, the Academy has teamed up with FÁS Screen Training Ireland to present an Editing Masterclass with Oscar-winning Editor Joel Cox with special focus on the Director/Editor collaborative process.

Cox began his career as an assistant on The Wild Bunch and has collaborated with Clint Eastwood (recipient of the inaugural John Ford Award) on over 30 films including ‘Million Dollar Baby, ‘Gran Torino’, ‘J Edgar’, and ‘Unforgiven’ (which will have it’s 20th Anniversary screening during the Symposium), for which he won an Academy Award and the Eddie, the American Cinema Editors top award. Cox was also named the Hollywood Film Festival’s Editor of the Year in 2006.

He is taking time out from a busy schedule editing Eastwood’s latest project ‘Trouble with the Curve’ to travel to Dublin for the Masterclass and to attend the Symposium.

The Masterclass – which is open to applicants across the industry – will focus on the Director/Editor collaborative process, and will cover areas including:

  1. Working with the Director
  2. First cut
  3. Refining the story in the editing room
  4. Incorporating work of HODs (ie sound, score, grading)
  5. Changing technologies
  6. Impact of genre on editing style and rhythms

FÁS Screen Training Ireland’s website has further information about the Masterclass, and people interested in attending can apply through the Screen Training Ireland website click here. The application deadline is Friday 1st June.  The Masterclass will be held at The Projects Arts Centre, Temple Bar, at 2pm on Saturday June 9. Tickets cost €20 or €15 for IFTA Members.

FÁS Screen Training Ireland’s is the State funded National Training & Development resource specifically created for Ireland’s film & television industry.
