Two Dublin-based post production houses have secured work on upcoming BBC drama ‘Ripper Street’, currently filming in Dublin.

Screen Scene VFX will be in charge of all things visual effects while Egg Post Production will run the offline, online, full audio post and grading.

Screen Scene was awarded the entire visual effects for the 8-part series in February, and is due to begin working on the drama this month right up until October.

VES Award-winner Ed Bruce (Game of Thrones) is the visual effect supervisor who will cover on-set production and in-house post production VFX. VFX producer Sarah Mooney and VFX coordinator Nick Murphy will manage a team of artists and all things VFX-related.

Screen Scene VFX are a NukeX and 3ds Max (VRay) house. It will be creating various visual effects for ‘Ripper Street’ from Digital Matte Paintings of London in 1889. It will also use set extensions in 2D, 2.5D and 3D with modern day clean ups.

VFX supervisor Ed Bruce says: “We're delighted to have been awarded ‘Ripper Street’, especially as we are getting to work with the Tiger Aspect production team for the BBC. It's always great to secure substantial work with a big client.”

As reported on IFTN last month, Irish production company Element Pictures is co-producing the series with Tiger Aspect Productions and Lookout Point. Tiger Aspect’s credits include BBC drama ‘Public Enemies’ and home improvement show ‘Restoration Man’, while Lookout Point previously worked on ‘Coco Chanel’ and ‘Ben Hur’.

A spokesman for Tiger Aspect noted last month: “The support of section 481 and the Irish Film Board was crucial in making our decision to shoot ‘Ripper Street’ in Ireland but the brilliant locations that Dublin offers up and high end crew talent were key factors when it came to making an informed decision.”

Bruce reiterates this point: “The scripts are great and there is a wealth of talent within the crew. I'm really excited about working on this project. Myself and Nick Murphy, VFX Coordinator, are really enjoying the on-set work we’re currently doing. There are great sets and locations around Dublin. The art department are also doing a fantastic job.”

Bruce is hoping ‘Ripper Street’ will garner the same audience attention as previous BBC dramas such as ‘Sherlock’, which saw 7.9 million people tuning in to its series two finale. “It's going to be great for Screen Scene VFX, our crew and for the Dublin visual effects industry in general,” says Bruce.

Una Ní Dhonghaile will work independently as she edits Block 1 with Gareth Nolan assisting. Colourist Sebastian Guest will grade the series, while Dominic Lord will serve as HD finisher and Howard Bargroff will be in charge of the sound mix. Therese Caldwell, also independent from Egg, will act as post-production supervisor on the project.

‘Ripper Street’ is set in the East End of London in 1889, and follows a group of detectives attempting to solve the Jack the Ripper murders. It stars Matthew Macfadyen (Pride and Prejudice), Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones) and Adam Rothenberg (House).

The Richard Warlow (Waking the Dead) creation will be aired in BBC One this Autumn.
