Following a strategical shift from Warner Bros. regarding their theatrical release schedule, the studio has confirmed that Irish director Lee Cronin’s upcoming Evil Dead reboot will now have a cinema release.

Originally destined for an HBO Max exclusive launch, the fifth instalment of the cult horror franchise will now premiere exclusively in theatres on April 21st, 2023.

Cronin wrote and directed the film, which stars Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher, and Mia Challis. Evil Dead Rise is one of only two films that have been changed to theatrical-only releases, the other being New Line Cinema’s remake of House Party, which releases on December 9th.

Evil Dead Rise is executive produced by the original filmmaking team behind the 1981 cult classic with Sam Raimi (writer, director, and executive producer on Evil Dead) and Bruce Campbell (who starred as Ash and executive produced on Evil Dead) both executive producing on Cronin’s instalment. Evil Dead producer Robert Tapert will once again produce the project.

IFTN previously reported back in July 2020 that Cronin had been tapped by Raimi, Campbell and Tapert following the success of his debut feature, The Hole in The Ground, which made a number of headlines following its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in 2019. The film’s North American distribution rights were then acquired by A24 and DirecTV, as well as securing a host of other international territory sales.

“I’m thrilled to bring Evil Dead back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film,” creator Sam Raimi (Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness), previously said. “I’m equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise.”

“At its core, Evil Dead is about ordinary people overcoming extraordinarily terrifying situations,” Bruce Campbell added. “I can’t wait for Alyssa and Lily to fill the blood-soaked shoes of those who have come before them and carry on that tradition.”

The film will also see Irish producers John Keville and Macdara Kelleher, who produced The Hole In The Ground, continue their partnership with Cronin as they also feature as executive producers on the upcoming project for New Line.

According to Collider, the decision to move it to theatres was made in part because of the trailer's performance during CineEurope. Reports after said that audiences were thrilled with the direction Cronin was taking the franchise.

Evil Dead Rise aims to be a fresh take on the franchise and its beloved Deadites, as a demon invasion takes over Los Angeles. It centres on two sisters, whose long-awaited reunion is cut short as a mysterious book is discovered within the older sister Ellie's building. Together, they need to fight against the demonic invasion summoned into their world both to save their family and find closure.

Speaking about the film for the first time, Cronin said: “The Evil Dead movies filled my brain with terror and awe when I first saw them at nine years old. I am excited and humbled to be resurrecting the most iconic of evil forces for both the fans and a whole new generation.”

Filming wrapped on the bloody production last October and will release in cinemas next April.
