Bankside Films has acquired Colm Bairéad’s remarkable, award-winning debut feature film, An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, winning the Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus International Jury for Best Film.

Bankside Films’ past Irish successes include Sundance title The Hole In The Ground by first time director Lee Cronin, which was acquired by A24 in the US; IFTA Best Film-winner Ordinary Love by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa, sold internationally to Focus Features and domestically to Bleecker Street; and Wolf, written and directed by Nathalie Biancheri and starring George MacKay and Lily Rose Depp, which sold to Focus Features globally.

We are delighted to be partnering with Colm and Cleona on this incredibly special film which has taken audiences and critics by storm since premiering in Berlin this year,” said Bankside’s Stephen Kelliher. “We were blown away by its beauty and perfectly judged emotion and we can’t wait to bring it to international audiences.”

An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), is based on the highly-acclaimed story, Foster by Irish author, Claire Keegan, with the screenplay written by Bairéad, produced by Cleona Ní Chrualaoi, and stars newcomer Catherine Clinch alongside Carrie Crowley, Andrew Bennett, Michael Patric and Kate Nic Chonaonaigh.

We are delighted to be partnering with Bankside Films on The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin). We have long been admirers of their work and are inspired by their passion for and belief in our film,” added Colm Bairéad & Cleona Ní Chrualaoi. “As we continue our incredible theatrical run in Ireland and the UK, we look forward to an exciting new chapter working with Bankside Films to bring The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin) to new audiences all around the world.

The film swept the board at the most recent IFTA Film & Drama Awards, winning eight Irish Academy awards including Best Film, Best Director, Lead Actress Film, and Bairéad receiving the Screen Ireland Rising Star award. Following the film’s world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival this year, it went on to become the first Irish language film to open the Dublin International Film Festival where it won the Audience Award and was also the winner of the Best Irish Film award at the Dublin Film Critics’ Circle Awards 2022.

The Irish-language film is currently on release in the UK (Curzon) and Ireland (Break Out Pictures) and crossed €800k at the box office last week, having received stellar 5-star reviews across the board and becoming the highest-grossing Irish film of recent years at the Irish-UK box office. The film is eligible to be Ireland’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars next year.

The film tells the story of Cáit (Catherine Clinch) - a nine year-old girl from an overcrowded, dysfunctional family who is sent away to live with her mother’s relatives for the summer. She is welcomed with open arms by Eibhlín (Carrie Crowley), but her husband (Andrew Bennett) keeps Cáit at arm’s length. Slowly, but surely, a warmth grows within this makeshift family and Cáit blossoms in their care. But in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.

An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) is produced by Cleona Ní Chrualaoi of Inscéal, the production company she established alongside Bairéad in 2012. The film was developed and produced as part of the Cine4 Irish-language feature film scheme. It was financed by Screen Ireland, the Irish-language broadcaster, TG4, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland through its Sound & Vision Funding Scheme and Section 481 funding.

Cleona was recently selected as one of Screen International's Stars of Tomorrow 2022. The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin) is Inscéal's feature film debut which has become one of the most successful Irish films of recent times having won multiple awards at the Berlinale, the Dublin International Film Festival and seven Irish Film & Television Academy Awards, including Best Film, Best Director & Best Actress. The film is the highest-grossing Irish film of recent years at the Irish-UK box office.
