IFTA-winning crime drama Kin set to begin production on season two and three later this month

Kin Season One.
AMC+ and RTÉ have green-lit a third season of their hit crime series Kin, which is due to film both seasons back-to-back later this month.

The news comes only months after the national broadcaster confirmed that the programme, which starred Aidan Gillen and Ciarán Hinds, would return for a second season following its successful debut to Irish audiences in 2021.

A hit with both audiences and critics, series one had a consolidated average of over 621,000 viewers on RTÉ One and 2.7 million streams on RTÉ Player to date, making Kin the most successful drama in Ireland last year. Each week viewers were enthralled by the unravelling of the Kinsella family, which starred Clare Dunne (Herself), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones), Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Sam Keeley (The Cured), and Oscar nominated Ciarán Hinds (Belfast).

The eight-part drama was created by Declan McKenna and Ciaran Donnelly, and charted the lives of the Kinsellas, a small but tight-knit crime family embroiled in a war against a powerful drug kingpin, Eamon Cunningham (played by Hinds).

Kin scooped six awards including Best Drama at the 2022 IFTA Film & Drama Awards earlier this year. McKenna picked up Best Script, while the cast took every acting award on offer with Sam Keeley and Clare Dunne receiving the Leading Actor awards along with Maria Doyle Kennedy and Ciarán Hinds earning the Supporting Actor awards.

The new season, which begins production later this month, will see the Kinsella’s as the top dogs in Dublin. They have incurred the wrath of an enemy even more dangerous than Cunningham. And where once there was the unbreakable bonds of blood and family, now there is only suspicion, distrust, and resentment. But the greatest threat to the family emerges from within- in the shape of a ruthless, bullying, agent of chaos. Fortunately, from positions of great adversity the boldest plans are often forged. And so, it is with the Kinsellas.

Kin is produced by BRON Studios and Headline Pictures, in association with RTÉ. AMC+ has acquired the rights to the drama for North America, Australia, New Zealand, Iberia, Latin America, and the UK.

No release date for the upcoming season has been revealed as of yet.
