New Line’s The Evil Dead sequel, being written and directed by Irish director Lee Cronin, has revealed that Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan will take on the leading roles for the upcoming instalment.

The production company also revealed that the project was being developed for Warner Media’s streaming service, HBO Max. Deadline believe the film may get a theatrical release in offshore territories where HBO Max is not available.

Evil Dead Rise is being executive produced by the original filmmaking team behind the 1981 cult classic with Sam Rami (writer, director, and executive producer on Evil Dead) and Bruce Campbell (who starred as Ash and executive produced on Evil Dead) both executive producing on Cronin’s instalment. Evil Dead producer Robert Tapert will once again produce the project

IFTN previously reported back in July 2020 that Cronin had been tapped by Raimi, Campbell and Tapertfollowing the success of his debut feature, The Hole in The Ground, which made a number of headlines following its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in 2019. The film’s North American distribution rights were then acquired by A24 and DirecTV, as well as securing a host of other international territory sales.

Speaking about the film for the first time, Cronin said: “The Evil Dead movies filled my brain with terror and awe when I first saw them at nine years old. I am excited and humbled to be resurrecting the most iconic of evil forces for both the fans and a whole new generation.”

The Evil Dead Rise will also see Irish producers John Keville and Macdara Kelleher, who produced The Hole In The Ground, continue their partnership with Cronin as they also feature as executive producers on the upcoming project for New Line.

“I’m thrilled to bring Evil Dead back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film,”said creator Sam Raimi. “The company’s history as pioneers of horror speaks for itself.”

“I’m equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise,” Raimi continued.

“At its core, Evil Dead is about ordinary people overcoming extraordinarily terrifying situations,” Bruce Campbell added. “I can’t wait for Alyssa and Lily to fill the blood-soaked shoes of those who have come before them and carry on that tradition.”

Evil Dead Rise is due to be filmed on location in New Zealand with post production taking place in Ireland. New Line will handle the US release, while Canal Plus will distribute in the UK and Metropolitan in France.
