FilmOffaly announces Professional Development Programme for Offaly Writers and Screenwriters
28 Jul 2020 : Nathan Griffin
Film Offaly
FilmOffaly is searching for emerging Offaly writers and filmmakers to take part in a Professional Development Programme.

The program aims to support writers of natural talent with unique and original voices by providing them with an insight into writing for Film, Television, and Screen media along with an overview of the film industry from a writer’s perspective.

FilmOffaly have commissioned professional script writer, producer, and director Helen Flanagan to deliver the programme; Helen regular works as a script editor and developer on TV projects. Her work as a writer and director has been funded by Screen Ireland, TG4, and Filmbase amongst others.

The programme is an exciting opportunity for four writers to participate in an intensive one-to-one focused support and is of interest to writers, filmmakers, arts practitioners, and creatives who wish to learn about, and develop their skills in storytelling for the screen. It will guide participants through the process of writing a screenplay from initial idea to final draft in collaborative and fun environment. On completion of the programme, writers can expect to have a broader and more significantly enhanced understanding of screenwriting, as well as at least one finished screenplay.

This entire programme is offered with no costs to the participants. Applicants do not need to come from a film-writing background but must be able to demonstrate a genuine instinct for storytelling. The programme will assist those without film experience to ensure that their ideas are script-suitable while making the most of their existing creative skills and the fresh perspective they may bring to the screenwriting process. Those with experience will enhance their professional knowledge, critical skills, and have the opportunity to further develop their screenwriting craft.

This unique professional development programme delivered by Helen is specifically aimed at writers, filmmakers, arts practitioners and creatives from or located in Offaly and is provided as part of FilmOffaly’s commitment to supporting filmmakers and film production in the region.

FilmOffaly and Laois Offaly Education Training Board will also be launching a series of workshops in September 2020 which are complimentary to the development programme. These workshops will focus will be open to the interested professionals in Offaly and Laois and will delve into how to work in film and also how to develop a script, they will be delivered by Helen Flanagan and by film consultant Alan Fitzpatrick. More information to follow.
