IFTN Festive Q&A with Lynn Rafferty of 'Taken Down'
20 Dec 2018 : Nathan Griffin
In the run in to Christmas, we have invited some of Ireland’s leading Film & TV talents to take part in IFTN’s festive Q&A.

Originally from Summerhill, Dublin, Lynn Rafferty pursued acting from a young age going on to train for three years at Bull Alley Theatre Training Company, followed by The Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin. She then went on to study comedic improvisation at Second City Training Centre in Toronto, Canada where she currently resides.

Perhaps best known for her role as Nadine in multi-award winning gangland drama ‘Love/Hate’, Rafferty is also an accomplished writer and comedic performer. Lynn wrote and starred in ‘The Arrival’, winner of six short film awards, including three Best Actress Awards. Other recent television credits include ‘Ripper Street’ for Amazon, RTE’s ‘Rebellion’.

Most recently, Rafferty starred in the hit RTE crime series ‘Taken Down’, where her character Detective Jen Rooney, investigates the violent death of a young Nigerian migrant whose body is found near a Direct Provision Centre.

IFTN journalist Nathan Griffin caught up with Lynn ahead of the festive season.

What was your highlight of 2018?

“Shooting Taken Down. Every one of us, cast and crew were so passionate about the story. It’s not often you get to lend your voice on screen to those that don’t always have one.”

What are you most looking forward to working on in the New Year?

“I have been writing my own comedy for the last while.  I am planning to shoot early next year so I am excited about that.”

What was your favourite Film of 2018?

“Definitely Rosie, I am a huge fan of Roddy Doyle and this did not disappoint. It was heartbreakingly perfect. Such powerful performances from Sarah Green and Moe Dunford. I saw it at a 9 a.m. screening at TIFF, first time I’ve ever been that emotional at 9 am… well in public anyway lol”

What TV Show did you binge watch this year?

“Sharp Objects was my top binge. Moody, eerie, mysterious with riveting performances by Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson.  The fantastic Jean-Marc Vallée nailed it once again.”

What Irish talent have you been impressed with this year?

“Kellie Harrington, she fought incredibly at the world championships. She’s incredibly dedicated and talented, a true champ.”

What International talent would you most like to work with?

“Ben Stiller. He directed Escape at Dannemora, which recently came out I am hooked. If it wasn’t a weekly release, I would have finished it in one sitting.  It’s perfectly paced intriguing storytelling; Mr. Stiller has more than made a mark in the dark TV drama world.”

What two film/television personalities would you most like to have dinner with? (Invite over for Christmas dinner) (Dead/Alive)

“Robin Williams and Catherine O’ Hara, they are two of my many comedy heroes.”

What’s your favourite movie to watch on Christmas day?

“Scrooged, I love Bill Murray. My brothers and I have watched this film together every Christmas and it’s still my favorite today.  It even ends with Bill singing an Annie Lennox song. I mean, it really has it all.”

Viewers can catch Season 1 of ‘Taken Down’ on the RTÉ Player.
