Trailers Round-Up: Irish Talent, Locations & Productions from 'Song to Song' to 'Twin Peaks'
2017-02-20 9:00:00 : Katie McNeice
Colin Farrell, 'Beguiled'
In addition to the latest cinema release round-up published last week, which notes the success of ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ alongside new releases ‘Maudie’ and ‘Lost in France’, an array of new trailers are out recently highlighting Irish productions, talent and locations.

The most recent of these is ‘Song to Song’ from Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) starring Irish talent Michael Fassbender (Assassin’s Creed) alongside ‘La La Land’ lead Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara, featuring Natalie Portman (Jackie).

It sees two love triangles play out amidst the Austin, Texas music scene, obsession and betrayal. Mara also stars in Jim Sheridan’s ‘Secret Scripture’, which is due to release to Irish cinemas on May 19th 2017.

‘Song to Song’ is produced by Broad Green Pictures and as of yet, does not have a release date confirmed for Irish audiences.

Lady MacBeth
Irish producer Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly’s feature debut brought her from the Toronto International Film Festival in 2016 to a Stars of Tomorrow nomination in October, as part of the BFI Film Festival in the UK. She was previously Oscar-nominated in 2012 for short film ‘Head Over Heels’.

‘Lady MacBeth’ also marks the feature debut for UK director William Oldroyd (Best) and writer Alice Birch (Jane Seeing Mark). The project is an adaptation of the Nikolai Leskov novella ‘Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District’ which was published in 1865, and tells the story of a 19th century bride who is sold into marriage to a middle-age man.

The project continues its festival run with screenings at both the Glasgow Film Festival and Audio Dublin International Film Festival this month. It is produced by Sixty Six Pictures.

The Beguiled
Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) has written and directed this remake of the 1971 title starring Clint Eastwood, with Irish actor Colin Farrell in the lead role. Farrell plays John McBurney, the injured Union soldier whose imprisonment in a Confederate boarding school for girls earns him the affection of the lonely women around him.

His con eventually works against him however, as they turn on each other and eventually on him. Nicole Kidman (Lion), Kirsten Dunst (Fargo S02) and Elle Fanning (Maleficent) also star.

‘The Beguiled’ is produced by American Zoetrope and will release to Irish cinemas on June 23rd 2017, from Universal Pictures Ireland.

Handsome Devil
John Butler’s evocative Irish boarding school drama is a light-hearted look at Ned and Conor, the unlikely pair who share a room at a rugby-mad boarding school. Young talents Fionn O’Shea (The Siege of Jadotville) and Nicholas Galitzine (High Strung) star alongside Andrew Scott (Spectre) and Moe Dunford (Patrick’s Day).

‘Handsome Devil’ is produced by Treasure Entertainment and will release to Irish cinemas on April 21st and is also set to close ADIFF 2017 on Sunday, February 26th.

Into the Badlands S02
The second instalment of this martial arts AMC series shot for sixteen weeks in Co. Dublin and Co. Wicklow in late 2016, with a cast featuring Irish talents Sarah Bolger (Halal Daddy) and Orla Brady (The Price of Desire).

‘Into the Badlands S02’ will premiere on AMC on Sunday, March 19th.

Twin Peaks
The relaunch of David Lynch’s classic mystery series is set to premiere on May 21st 2017. We spoke to the ‘The Secret’ actress Amy Shiels about the upcoming show earlier this year, with the young Irish talent unable to reveal anything about the upcoming sequel. This classic air of mystery around Lynch’s work is maintained with the recent teaser trailers.

Amy Shiels, ‘Twin Peaks’:
I first saw Twin Peaks just after finishing ‘Cowboys and Angels’ my cast mate Michael Legge introduced me to it and I was hooked! David Lynch’s work has always made me laugh through my terror - he’s still making me laugh through my terror.
