The Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) will host ‘Music for the Screen’ with Stephen Rennicks on Tuesday, February 10th in Dublin.
Putting music centre stage, in discussion with composer Stephen Rennicks, ‘Music for the Screen’ will explore the collaborative relationship between composer and director, the possibilities and practicalities around the business of music composition for the screen.
A composer for over 15 years, Stephen Rennicks is well known as a key collaborator of acclaimed Irish director Lenny Abrahamson – working with the filmmaker on all of his feature films so far.
Rennicks garnered critical acclaim for composing the score to Abrahamson’s 2004 IFTA-winning feature ‘Adam and Paul’, receiving an IFTA nomination for his work on the film. He also received IFTA nominations for his work on two latter Abrahamson features – ‘Garage’ in 2007 and ‘What Richard Did’ in 2012.
Rennicks gained much international notice in 2014 with the release of the musically driven film ‘Frank’ starring Michael Fassbender and Domhnall Gleeson and again directed by Lenny Abrahamson. For his work on the film – Rennicks received a British Independent Film Award for Technical Achievement – meaning the composer not only beat out other composers to the honour but editors, cinematographers and all other technical craftspeople.
Rennicks’ work in film and TV has not been limited to collaborations with Lenny Abrahamson however and his television work includes ‘Pure Mule’, ‘Bittersweet’, and ‘No Laughing Matter’. He has also composed the music for ‘Man About Dog’ directed by Paddy Breathnach, Stephen Bradley’s ‘Boy Eats Girl’ and Risteard O'Domhnaill’s IFTA-winning documentary ‘The Pipe’.
Rennicks is currently working on Paddy Breathnach’s new feature ‘Viva’ – which is written by and starring Mark O’ Halloran and he is expected to start work on Lenny Abrahamson’s new feature ‘Room’, starring William H. Macy and Brie Larson, later this year.
