Light House Cinema, Artdigiland and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura will host an afternoon with the celebrated Italian cinematographer Luca Bigazzi. The event begins at 2pm on Saturday October 25th with a Q&A hosted followed by a screening of his Academy Award-winning film, ‘The Great Beauty’.
Luca Bigazzi is one of Italy’s most sought-after and acclaimed cinematographers, known most recently for his collaborations with Paolo Sorrentino on such films as ‘Il Divo’, ‘This Must Be The Place’, and ‘The Great Beauty’. His work has been recognised in Italy with seven David di Donatello Awards for Best Cinematography, with a total of fourteen nominations. Other directors he has worked with include Mario Martone, Gianni Amelio, Francesca Archibugi, Silvio Soldini, and Abbas Kiarostami.
Following the public interview there will be a screening of ‘The Great Beauty’ which is one of Bigazzi’s most celebrated works and the most recent in a long-time collaboration with director Paolo Sorrentino. ‘The Great Beauty’ has been hailed by Robbie Collins of The Telegraph as ‘a shimmering coup de cinema’, by Richard Corliss of Time Magazine as last year’s ‘grandest, most exhilarating foreign film’ and Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times said ‘his visuals display the intoxicating richness of color 35-millimeter film in a way few contemporary ventures can match’.
Bigazzi will also be signing copies of the book “The Great Beauty: Told by Director of Photography Luca Bigazzi” that has been published for the first time in English by Artdigiland.
In this book-interview – edited by the photographer and film critic Alberto Spadafora – Bigazzi will explain his work using the camera and light and describes Sorrentino’s work methods. He also discusses the ethical and political issues in this harsh portrayal of Italy.
