‘Game of Thrones’ Dominates Emmy Nominations

Richard Dinklage has been nominated for Outstanding Actor
Announced yesterday, ‘Game of Thrones’, which is filmed in Northern Ireland and is now in production for its fifth series, has received a commendable 19 nominations for this year’s Emmy Awards. It beat series ‘Fargo, which got 18 nominations, and ‘American Horror Story: Coven’, with 17, to receive the most nominations for the 66th annual primetime ceremony.

The HBO TV series was nominated for the most prestigious award, Best Drama Series. In this category, ‘GOT’ will face tough competition against series that are beloved by audiences and critics alike, namely ‘Breaking Bad’, ‘Downton Abbey’, ‘House of Cards’, ‘Mad Men’ and ‘True Detective.’

Irish cast and crew members were indispensable to the production of the five series of ‘GOT’ so far. Among the nominees are Northern Ireland’s Ronan Hill, who with his team won for Outstanding Sound Mixing for season 2 of ‘GOT’ and was nominated again for season 3.

Regarding the nomination, Ronan Hill stated, “It is a great honour and privilege for the team to receive a Primetime Emmy nomination for a third consecutive year. 'Game of Thrones' gets bigger and better every season, with nineteen nominations this year including two for production and post sound.”

Other nominees from the series include Peter Dinklage for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, Lena Headey for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and Diana Rigg for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. The creators of the show, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been nominated for Outstanding Writing, and Neil Marshall was nominated for Directing.

‘GOT’ was also nominated for Art Direction for a Contemporary or Fantasy Series, Casting for a Drama Series, Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (for both Johnathon Freeman and Anette Haellmigk), Costumes for a Series, Hairstyling for a Single-Camera Series, Non-prosthetic Makeup for a Single-Camera Series, Prosthetic Make-up for a Series, Miniseries, Movie or Special, Original Dramatic Score, Sound Editing for a Series, Special and Visual Effects, Stunt Coordination for a Drama Series, Miniseries or Movie, and Interactive Programme.

‘Game of Thrones’ films on location across Northern Ireland and in Titanic Studios in Belfast and the Linen Mill Film Studios in Banbridge. Game of Thrones received funding from Northern Ireland Screen supported by Invest NI and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on Monday 25th August 2014. The ceremony will be held at NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles.
