Irish composer Brian Byrne’s ‘Albert Nobbs’ Song Nominated For World Soundtrack Award
16 Aug 2012 : By Eva Hall
Brian Byrne
Irish composer Brian Byrne has been nominated for a World Soundtrack Award for a song written for Glenn Close’s Irish-shot feature ‘Albert Nobbs’.

‘Lay Your Head Down’ is up for Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film at the October event. The song was composed by Byrne and features lyrics by Glenn Close. It was performed by Sinead O’Connor.

Byrne previously won the Best Original Score at this year’s IFTA Awards for ‘Albert Nobbs’. The soundtrack for the movie was recorded in the RTÉ Radio Centre by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and conducted by Byrne.

‘Lay Your Head Down’ is up against Florence and the Machine’s ‘Breath of Life’, recorded for ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’; ‘The Living Proof’, performed by Mary J Blige for ‘The Help’; Madonna’s ‘Masterpiece’ from ‘W.E.’ and ‘Man or Muppet’ from ‘The Muppets’ by Jason Segel and Walter.

‘Albert Nobbs’ was shot in Dublin in 2010/2011, with five-time Oscar-winner Close starring as a woman disguised as a man, opposite Janet McTeer. Irish actors Brendan Gleeson, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Bronagh Gallagher and Jonathan Rhys Meyers all had roles in the film.

Rodrigo García directed from a script written by Close. Alan Moloney of Parallel Films produced with Bonnie Curtis, Julie Lynn and Close. The film was nominated for several IFTA Awards this year, taking home four in sound, music, makeup and acting categories.

The 2012 World Soundtrack Awards will take place on October 20, the closing night of the Ghent International Film Festival in Belgium.
