Martin McDonagh’s ‘Seven Psychopaths’ To Receive World Premiere at Toronto Film Festival

Irish feature film ‘Seven Psychopaths’, starring Colin Farrell and Woody Harrelson, will receive its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The dark comedy from Oscar-winner Martin McDonagh joins Neil Jordan’s ‘Byzantium’ which will also screen for the first time at the Canadian festival.

Irish documentary ‘Men at Lunch’ has also been chosen to screen in the documentary section at TIFF, making it the fourth Irish-linked production screening at the 2012 festival.

As previously announced on IFTN, ‘Anna Karenina’ which has Armagh cinematographer Seamus McGarvey on board, and Australian feature ‘The Sapphires’, starring Roscommon actor Chris O’Dowd, have already been chosen to screen as Special Presentations.

‘Seven Psychopaths’ sees Farrell as a struggling LA-based screenwriter who gains inspiration from a dognapping ring he becomes involved with. When the dognap of a notorious gangster, played by Harrelson (Kingpin), goes wrong, Farrell’s character must try to stay to alive to write his new script. Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken also star.

This is the second time McDonagh has cast Farrell in a lead role having worked with him and Brendan Gleeson in 2008 black comedy ‘In Bruges’. ‘Seven Psychopaths’ will screen in the ‘Midnight Madness’ section of the festival.

‘Men at Lunch’, a documentary tracing the roots of the men featured in the famous 1932 photo ‘Lunch atop a Skyscraper’, will receive its international premiere at the festival, having already screened at the Galway Film Fleadh this year. Galway-based production company Sónta developed the documentary, with Seán Ó’Cualáin directing and Eamonn Ó’Cualáin producing. Fionnula Flanagan narrates the Irish-language version.

The Toronto International Film Festival will take place from September 6-16. The full schedule has not yet been announced, but more information on all screenings can be found at www.tiff.net.
