James Frecheville and Hugo Weaving in Black '47.
The revenge thriller set in Ireland during the Great Famine in 1847 during one of the most traumatic periods in Irish history will debut on Virgin Media One at 9pm on Friday, October 9th.

Black ’47 was the highest grossing Irish movie of 2018; becoming the first Irish feature film to break €1 million at the Irish box office since The Young Offenders in 2016.

Directed by Irish director Lance Daly (Kisses), the film follows Feeney (James Frecheville), an Irish Ranger as he returns to Ireland to reunite with his family after abandons his post while fighting for the British Army abroad, only to find his country in the worst stages of the Great Irish Famine. Read our interview with director Lance Daly.

Despite being hardened by his time on the battlefield, he is shocked by the horror he discovers when he returns home. Feeney finds his mother starved to death and his brother hanged by the brutal hand of the English. With little else to live for he sets a destructive path to avenge his family.

Black ’47 stars Hugo Weaving (Hacksaw Ridge, The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Oscar® winner Jim Broadbent (Iris), and rising international stars James Frecheville (Animal Kingdom) and Freddie Fox (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword). Read our interview with Hugo Weaving and James Frecheville.

The star-studded cast also has a strong Irish contingent including prolific stage and screen actor Stephen Rea (The Crying Game, Michael Collins), Moe Dunford (Michael Inside), Sarah Greene (Rosie), and Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk).

The screenplay was written by PJ Dillon (Rewind), Pierce Ryan (Standby), Eugene O’Brien (Eden) and Lance Daly (Life’s a Breeze, Kisses). Produced by Macdara Kelleher for Fastnet Films along with Tim O’Hair, Arcadiy Golubovich, and Jonathan Loughran. Black ’47 was financed by Primemeridian Entertainment, Screen Ireland, the Luxembourg Film Fund, Wildcard Distribution, Altitude, BAI, TV3, Eurimages, Umedia, Samsa Films, and Fastnet Films.

Tune in to Virgin Media One this Friday, October 9th at 9pm to watch the TV premiere of Black ’47.
