Irish feature Be Good Or Be Gone to have its World Premiere at the 18th Garden State Film Festival
27 Mar 2020 : Nathan Griffin
Les Martin and Declan Mills in Be Good Or Be Gone.
The New Jersey festival has shut down all attended events in the wake of the Covid-19 virus pandemic, but has opted to instead move its programme schedule to an online viewing platform.

The festival is one of only three film festivals worldwide currently conducting its festival digitally. As such, this has opened up the opportunity for anyone to buy tickets to the film, as ticketholders from anywhere in the world will be able to live stream the film online.

Among the selected titles is Irish dramedy, Be Good Or Be Gone, which was scheduled to make its World Premiere at the 18th edition of the Festival this Saturday, March 28th. The film is nominated for three categories including Best Actor for Declan Mills, Best Supporting Actress for Jenny-Lee Masterson, and Best Cast Ensemble.

Be Good Or Be Gone is set over the course of 4 days in contemporary Dublin and follows the story of Ste (Les Martin) and Weed (Declan Mills), two petty criminal cousins, who receive temporary release from Mountjoy prison.

Both lads have big plans for the future. Ste wants to make a better life for himself, his long term partner Dee (Jenny-Lee Masterson) and six-year-old daughter Ellie Mae. Weed's ambition is to conquer the world of high fashion, thus becoming the new Galliano but a nasty substance addiction needs conquering first. Ste refuses to be moved when gang boss Braler (Alan Sherlock) tries to intimidate him into a heinous act of violence. Weed convinces a reluctant Ste to take part in an armed robbery which goes badly wrong, resulting in a shopkeeper being brought to death's door. With news of the assault now broadcast over the airwaves and Braler breathing down their necks, Ste and Weed attempt to leave Dublin. As they are cornered by the dangerous world they so wanted to leave behind their plans for a bright new future seem to be dissolving away.

Be Good Or Be Gone is independently produced by Les Martin and Cathal Nally's Skidaddle Films Ltd. Filmed over three years, the production was mostly self-financed and part-funded through crowdfunding. It boasts a large cast including Graham Earley (Broken Law), Conor Lambert (Love and Friendship) Enya Martin (Comedian and Giz A Laugh Facebook page runner) Ruth Hegerty (Fair City, War Of The Buttons, Strumpet City) and Aoife King (Fair City).

The film was written by both Les Martin and Paul Murphy.  The music was composed by two-time Emmy nominated composer Joseph Conlan (Sanctuary, Galway Fleadh winner 2016), with the Offline Edit done by Weird Wolf Media (Tom Wolfenden), and Online Edit by John Talbot Panic Post Production (Young Offenders).
