IFTN Festive Q&A with Actor Moe Dunford
19 Dec 2018 : Nathan Griffin
In the run in to Christmas, we have invited some of Ireland’s leading Film & TV talents to take part in IFTN’s festive Q&A.

Moe Dunford first shot to prominence following his powerful display in Terry McMahon’s ‘Patrick’s Day’, which saw him receive a number of awards for his performance including the IFTA for ‘Best Actor in a Lead Role – Film’ at the 2015 ceremony. This performance also saw him pick up the EFP Shooting Star award at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival.

Best known for his role on History’s hit TV series ‘Vikings’, Dunford has also starred in several Irish feature films to date, including ‘Handsome Devil’, ‘Metal Heart’, ‘The Dig’ ‘Rosie’, ‘Black ‘47’ and Frank Berry’s ‘Michael Inside’, which picked up the IFTA for ‘Best Film’ at the 2018 ceremony.

IFTN journalist Nathan Griffin caught up with Moe ahead of the festive season.

What was your highlight of 2018?
“Getting to go to Kenya with Self Help Africa, without a doubt - seeing the work they do there was an experience that will stay with me for a long time.”

What are you most looking forward to working on in the New Year?
“There are a few more episodes of Dublin Murders left to shoot. Am enjoying the work up there with the cast and crew who have all gelled and are good craic. The scripts are great and spoiled to be working with Sarah Greene again, she’s just wonderful. I’m also excited about a short film project I’m doing in the New Year that Kerry Fox is directing. It’s about two Irish scaffolders in London & is a Kiwi made romantic/ comedy of sorts. I can’t wait to shoot it.”

What was your favourite Film of 2018?
“For an old school proper film, I'd say A Star Is Born. Lady Gaga & Cooper were absolutely electric; I was a right sucker for that film right from the start. ..But, if you’re looking for a good film to go to this Christmas with friends or family, I just saw the new Spider-Man animated film in Cineworld. In 4DX - that’s where your seat moves & sways to beats in the film & there's wind and rain affects in the room. I never had anything like that in my local cinema as a kid. It was wild. The film itself is easily one of the best superhero films ever. I'm telling ya, go see it!”

What TV Show did you binge watch this year?
“Myself and my father binged Better Call Saul. The only other show we'd done that with was Breaking Bad. It's a different beast of a show but just as rewarding. I love watching Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy / Saul and rooting for him when the odds are against him even if you know he’s been a bold boy. He’s hilarious and heart-breaking.”

What Irish talent have you been impressed with over the past 12 months?
“Lynn Rafferty and Gavin O'Connor. Two really sound people who were absolutely brilliant in their roles in Taken Down.”

“Ryan and Andy Tohill, Brian Falconer and Stuart Drennan. Have spent a lot of time with them this year and it's been a real joy, they're incredibly focused and hardworking and love what they do which is telling stories, AND they're a lot of fun to be around.”

What International talent would you most like to work with?
“James Mangold. 100% .He’s done the big Marvel films recently, but the action’s always so character driven. Logan was something special, in another league to what we’ve been used to seeing. He’s directed some of my favourite films, Walk The Line, Cop Land, and Girl, Interrupted.  I love his work.”

What two film/television personalities would you most like to have dinner with? (Invite over for Christmas dinner) (Dead/Alive)
“The Rubberbandits for grub and then maybe, hopefully, a few Polish cans, that would be nice. I would love that.”

What’s your favourite movie to watch on Christmas day?
“It's a Wonderful Life. I don’t know if I ever watched it on Christmas Day, but that film and Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey always makes me feel very grateful.”
