Keepers Of The Port screens at port | river | city in the IFI
22 Sep 2017 :
Moira Sweeney’s portrait of the Dublin Dock’s to screen as part of port | river | city at the IFI

Moira Sweeney’s documentary film ‘Keepers of the Port’ premieres at the IFI as part of port | river | city, a series of moving image works and interventions curated by Alice Butler & Daniel Fitzpatrick of aemi and artist Cliona Harmey. port | river | city is part of 'Port Perspectives', a Dublin Port Company series of commissions being realised throughout 2017 and which respond to the built environment, local areas, history and context of the city's port.

Keepers of the Port is a single screen version of a work previously exhibited as a site-specific multi-screen installation Rhythms of a Port. In the new expanded lyrical portrait, filmed and directed by Moira Sweeney on Dublin’s docks, a tender pride in working life emerges within the stories and memories of the custodians of the port. As a group of former dockworkers set about preserving their legacy, daily life continues for the stevedores, boatmen, marine operatives and port managers who keep this gateway to the world open. Arresting industry visuals are amplified by the rugged harmonies of forklift warnings, creaking wood and metal, squeaking ropes and pulleys, and seagulls. The local activity of loading and unloading cargo and containers persists as a busy, humming backdrop to the steady arrival and departure of transnational ships. As the film moves through each discrete yet interconnected hub of dock activity, the filmmaker narrates her reflections on the evolving picture of vibrant, transforming port life. Recurring themes across the film include a nostalgia for lost communal tradition and solidarity, the precarity of seafarers’ lives and the complexity of a global digitalised structure which controls ship movement into and out of ports.

The screening takes place on Saturday September 23rd at 3pm and is followed by a Q&A with Sweeney.

’Time And Tide - A Tribute To Peter Hutton’ will be shown earlier in the day as part of the same programme. This film studies the work of American experimental filmmaker Peter Hutton, who died in June, 2016. He was greatly influenced by his time working in the merchant marine. This tribute screening begins with ‘Lodz Symphony’ in which Hutton creates a melancholy world that evokes a 19th century industrial atmosphere populated with the ghosts of Poland’s past. This is followed by ‘Time and Tide’, a complex study of the relationship between man and sea, nature and industry, combining archive material with footage shot by Hutton aboard various vessels moving slowly through rivers and ports. The programme concludes with a portrait of New York in the 1970s, shot in the high contrast monochrome that defined his early career.
