Shorts Round-Up
05 Sep 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Irish short films continue to be selected for film festivals, receive award nominations and secure special screenings nationally and internationally…

Kevin Liddy’s Shorts Screen at the IFI

As part of Ireland on Sunday, the Irish Film Institute’s monthly showcase for new Irish film, the IFI will screen two shorts from director Kevin Liddy – ‘The Suffering Kind’ and ‘Horse’. Liddy will participate in a post-screening Q&A.

In his long-awaited new work, ‘The Suffering Kind’, Liddy moves away from the stark Irish countryside which defined his earlier films ‘Horse’, ‘Soldier’s Song’ and ‘Country’ to an urban setting in upstate New York. The drama is about an inner city priest and a sanitation worker trying to maintain his sobriety. Kevin’s first short, ‘Horse’, about a father's inability to communicate with his young son in 1960s rural Ireland, will also be screened.

Liddy is an award winning director whose shorts have received prizes at the Galway Film Fleadh, the Cork Film Festival, the Edinburgh Film Festival, the Premiers Plan Festival in Angers, France and the San Francisco Film Fest, among others. The screening takes place at 1pm on Sunday 14th September. You can purchase tickets on the IFI website here.

‘The American Dream’ up for festival award

Jason Barry’s latest directed short film, ‘The American Dream’, has been selected as one of this year’s finalist in the Louisiana Film Festival Prize. Shot entirely in Shreveport, Louisiana ‘The American Dream’ stars Jason, along with his brother Glen Barry and Charlene Gleeson. The short was written by both Jason and Glen and deals with an Irish families struggle to stay afloat stateside both emotionally and financially.

This is Jason and Glens second foray in to short films following ‘100 Degrees’ which opened the LA/Irish film festival in 2013.

‘The American Dream’ was produced by Malissa Colbert De Bosier, Chris Colbert and Monique Yamaguchi. Cinematography was by AJ Raitano.

The LAFFP runs from October 9th-12th in Shreveport, Louisiana. My short film COVET will screen in competition at the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival this weekend in Waterville Co. Kerry.

‘Covet’ screens at the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival

Irish writer/director Liam O Mochain’s short film ‘Covet’ recently screened at the 2014 Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival on Friday 22nd of August in Waterville, Co. Kerry. ‘Covet’ previously screened at, amongst others, the 2014 Belfast Film Festival, Arizona Int. Film Festival and the Dublin Int. Short Film Festival.

Covet is a quirky 12 minute short film about Bridget (Marion O’Dwyer) who talks candidly about her first and only true love. The main cast includes Marion O’Dwyer (‘Ondine’, ‘Agnes Browne’), Donnacha Crowley (‘Kings’), Gail Brady, Liam O Mochain and Paul Daly.

Writer/director/star Liam O Mochain (‘Grand Opening’, ‘WC’, ‘The Book That Wrote itself’) says that “‘Covet’ was inspired by one of the ten commandments.” ‘Covet’ is O Mochain’s 8th film, having made two feature film and six short films, as well as numerous documentaries and TV shows. His 2007 feature film WC won best foreign film at Las Vegas int. film festival, best film at the Waterford film festival and was screened at numerous international festivals.

Working behind the scenes on the film were DOP Fionn Comerford (‘Love Eternal’), production designer Damien Byrne, sound recordist Niall O’Sullivan (‘Frank’), 1st AD Eamonn Norris, hair & make up Caoimhe Arrigan, editor Ciara Brophy (Oscar nominee for ‘The Crush’), composer Richie Buckley (‘WC’, ‘The General’) and producer Bernie Grummell (‘Grand Opening’, ‘WC’, ‘The Book That Wrote Itself’).
