Rural Ireland in the 1960's. Young Michael Barry lives alone with his father Patrick, who ekes out a meagre living from the harsh unyielding land. They are looked after by Helen Garvy, a local widow woman, whose brother is an erstwhile drinking partner of Patrick's.
