Irish Talent to Feature at the World Championships of Performing Arts
07 May 2014 : Aisling Newton
Ireland will be among 50 countries taking part in the upcoming World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Hollywood, Los Angeles from July 11 – 21.

15 talented performers from Dublin, Wexford, Kildare and Meath aged between 10 and 29 years will represent Ireland in singing, acting, dancing and modelling. Among those are Susan Mary Ward (Ella Enchanted, Wimbledon), Luke Andrew Feeney (Noddy, Damo & Ivor) and 10 year old Susie Power (Hannah Cohen’s 1st Holy Communion, Fair City). Other participants include Rose Brady, Lucy Watson, Sam O’Shea, Jeannette Murphy, John Power, Olubukola Adebowale, Sinead O’Riordan, Brid Gallagher, Leah Carruth, Katelyn Doyle and Darragh McCardle.

Auditions for the championships were held before Christmas and the final closing ceremony will be aired live online and at a later date on FOX TV/NBC. The competitions will be adjudicated by worldwide agents and casting directors, record labels, top choreographers and other industry reps. Ireland has not been present at the WCOPA since 2010. Previously, IFTA 2013 nominee Seana Kerslake was the recipient of a scholarship to New York Conservatory of Drama, Aisling Doyle won a Summer Scholarship for 2 years at the Millenium School of Dance, and many of the Irish Team won medals, trophies and also participated in various agency jobs whilst there. Another up and coming Irish talent receiving high reviews is five year old Calum Heath from Tallaght, Dublin. Heath recently starred as Billy Williams in feature film ‘The Canal’, which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. The Ivan Kavanagh directed horror was sold to The Orchard in a rare on-site acquisition at the film festival following rave reviews. The Irish co-production also stars Rupert Evans and IFTA nominee Antonia Campbell-Hughes. ‘The Canal’ was produced by AnneMarie Naughton for Park Films, with co-producers Vaughan Sivell and Sander Verdonk.

Heath spent five weeks on set in Wicklow while filming ‘The Canal’ where he also performed three minor stunts with a professional stunt co-ordinator. Heath, who has been attending classes with Talented Kids Performing Arts School & MVW Talent Agency since the age of 4, also played a part in Terry Mc Mahon's film ‘Patrick's Day’, which was produced by Tim Palmer (The Last of the High Kings, Into the West) and co-produced by Rachel Lysaght (Dreams of a Life, The Pipe) for Ignition Film Productions with support from the Irish Film Board.
