Developments for Paco Torres’ ‘Blue Guitar’
10 Jul 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Paco Torres’ third feature film, ‘Blue Guitar’, is coming together. The feature was one of the most talked about projects at Paris’ recent Small is Biutiful co-production/distribution meet, and follows his features ‘Magic is Hope’ and ‘Saol’, which was shot earlier this year in only 14 hours.

‘Blue Guitar’ follows Elias, a 30-year-old Palestinian music teacher whose wife and child were killed in a car accident. Crippled with grief, Elias is torn apart inside when he meets Leon, an Israeli teenager whose parents died in a terrorist attack and who lives in exile. Without knowing Leon is responsible for the death of his family, Elias bonds with the young man who becomes like his son.

The cast for the project include Irish actors Elaine Cassidy (‘The Others’, ‘Disco Pigs’) and Lauryn Canny (‘Amber’, ‘A Thousand Times Good Night’) as well as Kais Nashif (“Big Bad Wolves”) and Sareh Bayat (“A Separation”). The writers on the film are Torres, Shane Perez and Johnny Fergusson.

Torres is from Spain but based in Dublin. His credits include the acclaimed short ‘The Rattle of Benghazi’. He has stated that: “‘Blue Guitar’ is not politically engaged but rather focused on the humanity of Elias and Leon’s characters and their relationship.”

The film has a budget of around €1.5 million ($2 million), and will be produced by Irish firms Epos Film and Grand Pictures with backing from The Irish Film Board. Approximately a third of the financing has been covered. Torres said he was looking for a French co-producer partner and a sales agent.

The film will either be set in the South of France or Ireland depending on the financing.
