Deadline extended for Frameworks, Screen Ireland and RTÉ's short animation fund
07 Feb 2022 : News Desk
Oscar nominated Frameworks project, Late Afternoon.
A news deadline has been set for Screen Ireland and RTÉ’s flagship animation scheme, which will now close on March 4th.

The Frameworks short animation scheme has produced a number of award winning films including Louise Bagnal’s Oscar nominated short film, Late Afternoon.

Projects selected for funding will combine creative exploration with an ability to appeal to a general audience, however please note this is not a scheme aimed at children. Films may be made in English or Irish (if produced in the Irish language subtitling will be necessary for festivals & sales worldwide).

Parameters of the Scheme:

  • Number of films for 2 minute projects: Up to 2 per year
    • Maximum budget €20,000*
  • Number of films for 5 minute projects: Up to 2 per year
    • Maximum budget of up to €55,000*
  • Method: All forms of animation acceptable
  • Delivery: DCP, Prores & MP4

* The application budget should reflect costs for delivery as above and subtitling if applicable.

Screen Ireland encourages those less experienced applicants to apply for the shorter film level, and remind applicants that the longer films will only be considered if submitted by a studio with a proven track record in delivering long form animation such as animated features, tv series etc.

Projects of Maximum 2 minute duration

2 x two minute films at €20,000 – This scheme seeks high-quality, concise, imaginative story-telling to be delivered by applicants wishing to make an impact on the domestic and international stage. The films will be strictly no more than 2 minutes in duration requiring efficient and effective visual narratives. Applicants with excellent proposals who are deemed to require assistance in specific areas of expertise will be assisted by Screen Skills Ireland with mentor support, however although a 2 minute scheme it is emphatically for professionals already working in the animation industry and not a training scheme.

Projects of Maximum 5 minutes duration

2 x five minute films for budgets of up to €55,000 – Applicants should demonstrate previous experience in delivering high-end, top quality animation films. The film should showcase the director and creative team’s outstanding talent and experience and be of a story-telling and visual standard capable of attracting world-wide festivals and distribution.

Applicants must apply as part of an established studio. The studio must be able to demonstrate a proven track record in the successful development and production of long form animation projects such as animated features, TV series etc. which have been screened for Irish and international audiences.

Applicants should apply with the support of an established studio who can deliver their film to the specification, budget and quality that this level of scheme demands.

-

All Frameworks projects are selected with an expectation of achieving international success, and this particularly applies to the higher budget films. Examples of successful films from previous rounds include Late Afternoon (Cartoon Saloon), Second to None (Caboom), The Missing Scarf (Belly Creative), Coda (And Maps And Plans), The Boy in the Bubble (Igloo), Granny O’Grimm (Brown Bag), Badly Drawn Roy (Jam Media) and Irish Folk Furniture (Mayfly Films) amongst others.

Deadline

The deadline has been extended to 1pm Friday 4th March, 2022.

The online system will automatically close down at 1pm on this day so please ensure your submission is completed and submitted well in advance of the deadline as late applications will not be accepted by email or otherwise.
