Big Mountain in Prep with ‘Mastercrafter’
27 Apr 2011 :
'Mastercrafter' Judge, Paul Costelloe
2011 marks the national Year of Craft here in Ireland and with the estimated value of domestic sales and exports of crafts set to rise from €498m to €703.5m, Big Mountain Productions are currently in pre-production with ‘Mastercrafter’, a 6 x 52 minute series that will seek to crown the cream of Ireland’s master craftspeople.

Big Mountain Productions are working with the Craft Council of Ireland on the new series for RTÉ which will be directed and shot by Mark O’Neill (Showhouse) and Pete Killane (The Brendan Courtney Show). The series will shoot all over Ireland at the end of May until late August and will see the production team travelling the length and breadth of Ireland in search of amateur craftspeople in each of the crafts disciplines; glass, wood, metal (blacksmithing), textiles (weaving), and ceramics.

Applications are currently being accepted to take part in the programme from which 15 craftspeople will then undertake an intensive two-week residential apprenticeship to master their craft discipline under the expert guidance of one of Ireland’s top craftspeople. A judging panel including Irish clothes designer, Paul Costelloe will adjudicate who goes through from each discipline to the final of a national crafts competition, held on July 27th, where the overall winner will be crowned Mastercrafter 2011. Other judges on the panel are to be announced in due course.

The show’s executive producers are Jane Kelly (Imeall Geal) and Philip McGovern (Traffic Blues) and Jane tells us that the series is more relevant now than ever before: “There has been a huge explosion in the area of Irish craft,”she explains. “We’ve been known for our Aran Jumpers and traditional crafts for generations now but I think ‘Mastercrafter’ will bring Irish audiences bang up to date with the Irish craft scene.”

The series’ shoot will wrap in August after which the show is set to be edited in Newry and Dublin, post-houses and editors TBC. The six part BAI and RTÉ funded series is to start its broadcast in the first week of September. The show’s casting director is Catherine Munro (Watch Your Language) and anyone looking to take part in the series needs to apply by 5pm on Monday, May 9th.
