Screen Training Ireland have announced a series of courses focusing on film finance and documentary direction for the April and May.
Company Accounts Overview

This programme is open to owners/managers, producers/directors & bookkeepers who wish to gain a deeper understanding of company accounts and the responsibilities of the production company in facilitating the preparation of company accounts.
The course will focus on:
- Company Accounts - Review of Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet of production companies
- Tax Returns - Income Tax Returns of Directors, Corporation Tax Returns
- Companies Office -Annual Return Submission (ARD), Abridged Financial Statements, Misc. Companies’ Office Forms.
- Procedures to Facilitate Preparation of Company Accounts - ability of accounting system to assist in preparation of financial statements, use of computerised accounting system to enable the above (MYOB software), development loans, tracking of costs incurred on development projects, production loans, bank reconciliations, creditor reconciliations, revenue requirements VAT/ PAYE, use of tax deduction cards Vs computerised payroll.
The Course will be tutored by Jim Gillespie, a partner in Brophy Gillespie Chartered Accountants and Registered Auditor. Jim has an extensive knowledge of production company accounts and is accountant to a large range of film and television companies.

FINANCING FILM & TELEVISION PRODUCTIONS
– LEGAL AND CONTRACTUAL CONSIDERATIONS

This programme is aimed at film & television producers who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of the legal and contractual considerations involved in financing film and television production, both in Ireland (with particular emphasis on the working of Section 481) and abroad, and the way in which selected sources of finance are typically combined in order to complete a film’s financing.
Participants will develop their knowledge and understanding of:
- section 481 and how it works in practice (including a detailed section 481 case study)
- other national and international financing sources: focusing in particular on recent
developments in the UK and including a review of selected other countries, (including
Germany, Canada, Luxembourg and South Africa)
- combining section 481 with other sources of finance for international co-productions
- legal and financial closing: inter-party agreements, security and mutual funding covenants; collection agreements; completion guarantees and concept of “on risk”
- co-production case study: assembling the financing jigsaw in the context of an international production
- overview of sales agency agreements and distribution agreements
The course will be tutored by Jonathan Kelly and Roger Leviton.
Johathan joined Philip Lee Solicitors in 2002 having spent several years as head of business and legal affairs for a leading film and television company. He advises the Irish Film Board as well as a number of Irish and international banks in connection with film financing transactions. Jonathan has acted as legal advisor to the producers of the following film and television projects:
Circle of Friends, Braveheart, Croupier, Ordinary Decent Criminal, Dirty Tricks, Invincible, Sophiatown, Timbuktu, Trauma, Churchill:The Hollywood Years. In addition Jonathan has advised financiers in relation to forthcoming projects Man About Dog Omagh, Asylum and Tutenstein.
Roger Leviton joined Philip Lee Solicitors in 2002 and is an associate in the firm’s entertainment and media practice. Roger has been a legal advisor on Timbuktu, Omagh, Trauma, Churchill: The Hollywood Years, In My Father’s Den.

In addition, FÁS Screen Training Ireland and Loopline Film will be running a Creative Documentary Course in May 2004.
The course is aimed at documentary filmmakers who have made at least one film that displayed originality of approach.
Previous participants on the documentary course have gone on to produce acclaimed work; Barry Dowdall with‘Ned Kelly’, Brendan Culleton with ‘Strongbow’, Irina Maldea with ‘Tintown’, Pat Collins with ‘Tory Island’ (Best Documentary IFTA Awards) and Adrian McCarthy ‘Living The Revolution’ (Best Documentary New York Film Fleadh).
