Biography
Garry Keane is a native of Donegal. In the 1980’s he emigrated to New York and later to London where he studied Journalism at the London College of Communications under the stewardship of Brian Beehan, (younger brother of Brendan).
He returned to Ireland in 1989 where he enrolled in the National Film School at IADT and was awarded - Irish Film & Television, ‘Student of the Year 1991’ on graduation. That same year Garry was one of three cameramen chosen from across Europe to shoot three films made to commemorate, Dublin Cultural Capital 1991.
Between 1991 and 1999 Garry worked as a cameraman on countless documentaries and drama's, many of which, including 'Where the Heart Remains', directed by his wife Alison, picked up numerous awards at international film festivals. He also shot landmark series like, 'From a Whisper to a Scream’ and ‘Hidden Treasures’ both of which received huge critical acclaim and produced and shot ‘Boys for Rent’ (Best Irish Film-Cork International Film Festival) and ‘Male Rape’, a feature doc which was screened worldwide.
In 1999 Garry started his directing career. The six part series for RTÉ 1, ‘After a Fashion' was his first. Since then Garry has produced and directed all factual documentary genres: Reality shows like 'You're a Star' and 'The Secret Millionaire', Arts Documentaries like 'The Artist in Me', ‘Patterns' and 'Charlie Chaplin...The Waterville Picture', wildlife films like, the 'Machali - The Queen of Tigers' for the BBC Natural World series and sports documentaries, 'Bagman...Behind the Ropes', 'Close Encounters of a Sporting Mind', and 'We Got Game...The Golden age of Irish Basketball'.
In 2012, 'The Writing in the Sky', was nominated for four IFTA's and won two for, 'Best Director in Television' and 'Best Sound in Television'. In all, documentaries directed by Garry have been nominated for sixteen IFTA’s and have won four.
In his 25+ years working in film & television, Garry has made documentaries in 18 different countries worldwide for RTÉ, BBC, Channel 4, Granada TV, MTV USA, Smithsonian and National Geographic. |
