'Barry's Bespoke Bakery’ in high demand in California.
Irish bakery short accepted to California film festivals; a North-South film collaboration prepares for principal photography; and DKIT students win award at Guth Gafa International Documentary Festival.

‘Barry's Bespoke Bakery’ a hit at three California film festivals

‘Barry's Bespoke Bakery’, an Irish Film Board-funded short with a culinary theme revolving around characters working in a bakery, has been accepted to the prestigious Palm Springs International Film Festival and the LGBT festival Festroia in Portugal.

Last month it won Best Screenplay and was nominated for Best Director at the Fastnet Short Film Festival, which took place last week in Schull, with Jim Sheridan accepting the award on behalf of director and writer Denis McArdle.

The Palm Springs screening will mark the third festival appearance for ‘Barry's Bespoke Bakery’ following the San Francisco Irish Film Festival and the Newport Beach International Film Festival.

The short was produced by Ben Keenan and star Michael Bates (The Tudors) and Steve Gunn (‘Titanic: Blood and Steel’).

Cross-Border collaboration 'Volkswagen Joe' to start shooting this Monday

‘Volkswagen Joe’, a North-South film project funded by the Peace and Reconciliation PEACE III Programme, will begin filming a one week-shoot this Monday 10th June in Swanlinbar in Cavan and Fermanagh.

Brian Deane (Spike Lee Winner at Cannes) directs the film, which is set in Northern Ireland and focuses on a conflicted border-town mechanic who is faced with an impossible decision that will change his life forever.

‘We are not here to pick sides, we're here to tell the personal story of a man struggling to do the right thing in a time where fear and violence has polarised society. We want make a film that makes people think, not only about how far we've come but about the great sacrifices people have made along the way for us to have this lasting peace,’ he said.

An impressive cast includes Stuart Graham (‘Hunger’, ‘The Fall’), Janet Moran (‘Love Hate’, ‘Breakfast on Pluto’) and Paddy Rocks (‘A Belfast Story’, ‘Game of Thrones’).

Producer Anna O’Malley (‘Vikings’) praised Brendan McCann, the Belturbet drama society and the production team which includes cinematographer Paddy Jordan (‘Pentecost’, ‘Stitches’), production designer Padraig O'Neill (‘Garage’, ‘Boxer’), costume designer Caitriona Ni Threasaigh (‘Neverland’, ‘Becoming Jane’).

A Techno Wolf Films production, ‘Volkswagen Joe’ was made in association with Peace 111 and Belturbet Drama Society.

DKIT student short ‘Kinds of Blue’ wins at Guth Gafa

'Kinds of Blue', a short documentary by DKIT students Joske Slabbers, Catherine Mc Grath & Jay Javeri, won the main prize at the Next Generation student documentary competition at this year's Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival, held in Donegal and Derry from May 16-19th.

The Next Generation student documentary competition aims to engage audiences with youthful material and provide inspiration to other students, and is sponsored by Ardmore Sound, Yard Media and Soilsiú Films.

The competitive programme consisted of ten short documentary finalists - on the theme of human rights or social and environmental issues - from Irish film students in their final undergraduate year or on a postgraduate course.

The winning third year students on DKIT’s BA in Video & Film Production were assisted in their efforts by their creative documentary module lecturer Eamonn Crudden.

Further information on DKIT’s film making courses is available here.
